Goodness of Fit
The goodness of fit refers to the degree to which a child’s temperament and environment are compatible. When there is a good match between the two, it can result in a more positive experience for the child. The three main temperaments include easy-going, active-alert, and slow-to-warm-up. The easy-going temperament is typically adaptable, flexible, and even-tempered (Buhs et al., 2018). They are often described as “go-with-the-flow” types of people. The active-alert temperament involves children who are highly curious and energetic. They are often described as “on-the-go” and “busy bees” because they are always exploring their surroundings. The slow-to-warm-up includes those who are often shy, reserved, and take longer to adjust to new environments or people. The goodness of fit is important for each temperament type in order to create a healthy development for the child. Educators and parents should be aware of a child’s temperament to provide the best possible care.
My own temperament would be considered easy-going. I can easily adapt to new environments and situations. I also tend to be flexible and even-tempered. It allows me to be successful in various settings, such as the classroom or working with children one-on-one. I can also understand and empathize with those with a different temperament than me, which is beneficial when working with children of all temperaments. When children misbehave or act out, it is often because they are not feeling comfortable in their environment. Therefore, I will keep calm and try to understand the situation from their perspective to help them feel more comfortable. Parents can also use the goodness of fit to reduce unwanted child behavior. For example, if a parent knows their child has an active-alert temperament, they can provide opportunities for them to explore and be curious in a safe environment (TEDxTalks. 2015). They can give them tasks like looking for specific items around the house or painting with different colors. If a parent knows their child has a slow-to-warm-up temperament, they can help them by gradually introducing them to new environments and people. They can start with small groups of people and then slowly increase the number of people their child is around.
