Goal Theory and Motivation

Goal Theory and Motivation

What sorts of behaviors and attitudes distinguish students with mastery and performance goals?

Motivation is to direct and energize someone to reach a goal. Teachers motivate students by designing the perfect learning environment that leads them to achieve these goals. Students with mastery goals tend to engage in activities that help them learn through strategies, paying attention, learning from their mistakes, and having a healthy perspective toward learning. At the same time, students with performance goals avoid failure and put the slightest effort into accomplishing their goals.

Researchers also have found that the learning context can shape students’ goals. Describe learning situations where you have held these different goal orientations. What helped or hindered your performance?

Culture, society, technology, and academic context influence learners’ behavior and cognitive processes.

Learning about the student’s culture and their social group helped me a lot in their learning. When teachers try to find information and learn about their students’ backgrounds, their academic progress will be at its best simply because students will feel relaxed and welcome in a diverse classroom. In building an encouraging classroom environment, the teacher tries to align the students’ home culture with the school culture to help them and push them to succeed.
