Globalization and Trends

Globalization and Trends

Summary

Globalization has led to the integration of interests among entities from different parts of the world. One of the most notable impacts of globalization on tourism has been the modernization of the transport sector, with major world airlines creating new tourism hubs. In addition, globalization has impacted world demographics and population, enabling tourism companies to target the extremely rich from the Western world. Another emerging issue from globalization that is relevant to tourism is security and terrorism, with the developed world issuing travel advisories to their tourists to prevent them from touring some parts of the world that are characterized by insecurity issues. Globalization has also motivated tourist companies to explore and eventually discover new tourist destinations.

The Concept

Globalization and the Tourism Industry

Globalization and the tourism industry are intertwined. Due to globalization, people can now exchange knowledge on economic, social, cultural, as well as political issues. With increased understanding and interaction, people are gradually moving out of their tribal, cultural, and religious cocoons and embracing humanity (Linetti, 2019). Besides, globalization has led to people realizing that there is strength in pulling together as global allies instead of focusing on imaginary conflicts. For instance, sometimes, it is hard for tourists from the Western world to tour selected destinations in the Arab world due to security issues. However, globalization has changed people’s attitudes, thus facilitating global tourism.

Trends

Globalization has contributed to some emerging trends related to or affecting tourism. One major trend has been the incorporation of tourism into political processes (Empirics Asia, 2016). For instance, the United States has the Office of Tourism and Travel Industries (OTTI), which is responsible for the formulation of the United States’ foreign policy. Besides, governments are actively engaged in streamlining travel to their countries by making visa policy changes and implementing national policies to ensure foreign travelers do not have a hard time accessing their preferred destinations (Empirics Asia, 2016). Another major trend in global tourism borders on the impact of human activities on tourism. Tourist bodies, companies, and other environmental bodies are actively looking for ways to reduce the impact of human activities on tourism.

Five Key Terms

Tourism World-Making

Tourist world-making refers to the information a visitor gets about a destination they tour from the local people, given that they have little time to understand the local culture and way of life.

Cultural Commodification

Cultural commodification refers to the association of monetary value with tourism, such that some tourist items, like cultural sculptures and items stolen from old temples, are sold for money, thus leading to the degradation of a community’s cultural beliefs and authentic tourism.

Collaborative Consumption

Collaborative consumption refers to a social movement in which people are only interested in accessing certain services and goods rather than owning them, and it is relevant to tourism in areas like Airbnb and low-budget tourism experience arrangements.

Conscious Consumerism

Conscious consumerism refers to emerging consumer behavior in which buyers make purchasing decisions based on their values and beliefs, hence influencing companies to attempt and project a more ethical image to get more customers.

Homogenizing

Homogenizing refers to the act of spreading Western culture through music, food, and movies, among other platforms, with the intent of familiarizing people with the culture and actions that make one culture indistinguishable from the other.
