Globalization and Healthcare
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.
Globalization is a result of various actions and trends that occurred in the past. The process of globalization is not isolated to the current times. The occurrences and events of the past have played a critical role in today’s globalization. If these issues and global events did not occur, globalization would be non-existent as it is today. The actions, policies, and decisions that people who lived in the past undertook were responsible for the various aspects of today’s globalization. The present determines the future.
Similarly, the past influences the present. Therefore, it is prudent to highlight past issues that have led to today’s globalization. Similarly, scholars should refer to current events when discussing globalization that will occur in the future.
Discuss the significance of your historical research question about your current event.
Globalization and the current American healthcare system are interconnected because past policies and administrative decisions shape today’s system. The pandemics and health-related occurrences that took place in the past led to the formulation of various policies meant to improve the healthcare system (PNHP, 2022). Considering these factors, the research question’s essence fosters an understanding of the current system. Readers can comprehend the reasons for the current healthcare system’s nature. In addition, it facilitates the improvement process as different stakeholders identify loopholes or past failures that can be corrected for a more effective healthcare system.
Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question.
Primary and secondary sources played a key role in highlighting the gap. The sources only discuss past globalization trends briefly without providing sufficient detail. The lack of such information leaves a gap in understanding as readers are denied critical information. Some sources also highlight rarely discussed issues, causing the reader’s attention to divert towards these. For instance, the idea that the American healthcare system is not the best globally and could benefit from other countries’ models is not a common discussion (Conklin, 2002). However, when the author explicitly states this in their work, the readers’ interest is piqued significantly. This leads to further exploration of the current gaps, comparison with other healthcare systems, and ideas for improvement. However, the process is more beneficial if it takes place in the minds of policymakers because they can make the required changes.
Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions
Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.
The process of globalization is dependent on past events. The current health care system has developed due to the policies and legislation set up in the past. For instance, multiple reforms have occurred, changing the healthcare sector. The external influence of progressivism led the US administration during the 20th century to pursue the achievement of universal coverage (Manchikanti, Li, Benyamin, & Hirsch, 2017). This external influence led to multiple suggestions for programs to achieve the objective. Since then, each presidential candidate has been striving to achieve universal coverage using different legislations that could improve the existing system’s effectiveness. This situation explains past events and trends’ impact on globalization as it is known today, validating the concept.
Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican presidential candidate in the 20th century, is significant to the current healthcare system. The candidate supported the idea of achieving universal medical coverage. While the candidate did not introduce the idea, his support was necessary for pushing the idea forward. It created a foundation for other legislators and presidential candidates to build upon. By 1933 and 1949, other leaders had taken on the idea and began to push for its implementation (Manchikanti, Li, Benyamin, & Hirsch, 2017). Thus, Theodore Roosevelt was a key figure in the initiation and subsequent evolution of America’s healthcare system.
Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The desire to push for or support universal medical coverage resulted from progressivism. The main motivation was the belief that a healthy nation was critical for the progress of any country (PNHP, 2022). Therefore, the idea was to ensure access to care for all citizens and promote public health.
Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative
Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event.
The current healthcare system used in the USA is not necessarily the most effective. The system’s shortcomings arise from inaccessibility. Countries such as Canada and England have better systems that could be used as benchmarks while improving the current system. This narrative confirms that the process of evolution is not complete. The healthcare system still needs to undergo numerous changes to improve its effectiveness. Its current shortcomings are a function of legislation, policies, and programs instituted in the past and failed to deliver the intended objectives (Conklin, 2002).
Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history.
Biased perspectives tend to deny the public crucial information. The readers only access one aspect of the narrative. They remain uninformed about the other aspects that have influenced the highlighted aspects. Thus, readers remain ignorant about the history that led to the current process.
Identify the perspectives you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative.
The main elements lacking from the highlighted narrative are details regarding the entire initial healthcare program formulation process. The author’s presentation, which highlights numerous leaders and their roles in the process, leaves little room for details regarding each leader’s or regime’s contribution to the process.
Part 4: Connecting the Past with the Present
Researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event.
To understand the current healthcare system in the USA, it is necessary to review the past events that led to its existence. Finding and discussing the historical roots creates enlightenment regarding the process of evolution. Finding the information regarding the historical process enables all readers to visualize it and understand the system’s current state. In addition, it is possible to comprehend the shortcomings which could lead to the subsequent development of solutions.
Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an individual.
Questioning my beliefs and assumptions is important because it promotes critical thinking. It seeks more information regarding the various aspects and issues attached to different beliefs and values. The thorough evaluation of these aspects enables elimination of values and beliefs that are no longer valid. This allows one to maintain a clear perspective of various issues and concepts.
Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary issues.
Being a more historically informed citizen would be essential to understanding contemporary issues. Such a citizen would highlight critical occurrences that led to the current issues that people experience. This would help one understand various concepts better and lead to an appreciation of those past aspects’ role in today’s happenings. To develop such knowledge, one must consciously look through the annals of history, which inform various concepts. The conscious decision to look beyond the authors’ writeups provides an opportunity for further discovery. The discovery journey creates increased awareness and ensures that all aspects regarding the current state of the studied concept are clear. It eliminates the aspects of ignorance that tend to linger within one’s subconscious mind.

Question
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
- Develop questions about foundational historical events that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using evidence from primary and secondary sources
- Determine fundamental approaches to studying history in addressing questions about how events are shaped by their larger historical context.
- Investigate major developments in the progression of historical inquiry for informing critical questions related to historical narrative.
- Articulate the value of examining historical events for their impact on contemporary issues.
Many people argue that we are products of our past. However, as the Chinese philosopher Confucius suggested, because the contemporary events around us have histories, we can examine them to understand how and why they came to be. By developing the skills needed to investigate those histories, we can uncover and learn from the historical roots of current events. Some skills include researching, examining narratives, uncovering personal biases, and finding credible resources. We might not want to be historians in the future, but we should all understand how to look at things from a historical standpoint to understand contemporary issues better.
For this project, you will choose a historical event to explore from the Library Research Guide. These events fit into the topic areas of:
- Inequality and human rights
- Political revolutions
- Climate change
- Globalization
