Globalization and Diversity Geography of a Changing World- Chinese Development

China is among the smallest countries in East Asia based on population and size. Although the country has gained global popularity as a leading manufacturer of various goods, including electronics, the economic development in the region is still a major issue that needs to be addressed. According to Price et al., the future of China’s economy is among the biggest uncertainties facing the world and East Asia (379). The main factor contributing to slow economic development in China is the country’s economic model. China faces criticism for unfairly maintaining low labor costs to increase exports and enacting various barriers to imports. China also mistreats factory workers, especially those manufacturing electronic goods for export (Price et al. 379). For instance, most workers in the factories have raised concerns about being exposed to dangerous chemicals and being forced to work for long hours under harsh conditions without extra pay.

The second factor contributing to slow economic development in China is communism. According to Price et al., the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution made it hard for China to eliminate communism (379). The Great Leap Forward was based on the idea that small-scale village workshops could meet the iron production targets created to sustain industrial growth. The Communist Party set unreasonably high production quotas, resulting in a famine that killed 20 million people. The Cultural Revolution, on the other hand, focused on mobilizing young people to replace the undesirable conventional social values with a communist ideology. The revolution led to a massive loss of jobs among college professors and experienced industrial managers. Some college professors and experienced industrial managers were also killed, while others were sent to the villages for reeducation through hard physical labor. Currently, China continues to run the most heavy industries through the state, and political power is held by the Communist Party, which controls economic activities.
