Globalization
Globalization refers to actions that bring people from different parts of the world together, integrate economies, and lead to cultural exchanges. Depending on its international relations, a country may be classified as globalized or less globalized. The three main hallmarks of globalization include ease of travel, expansion of communication technology, and market integration: Globalization.
One of the differences between a globalized and less globalized country is the varying degree of access to information and technology. In a globalized country like the US, one can access a wide range of information and advanced technology (Skare & Soriano, 2021). For instance, high internet speeds mean one can access valuable information on social media and other digital platforms faster and leverage it to improve the quality of one’s life.
Also, high internet speeds can support individuals to work remotely for international organizations, earning an income to improve their lives. However, access to information in less globalized countries is limited (Pevehouse & Goldstein, 2017). For instance, North Korean residents have limited access to information because of government censorship of critical internet sites. This difference would particularly affect me because I rely on global informational sites and social media for my work, and some of these platforms may not be accessible in a less globalized country.
Another key difference between a globalized and a less globalized country is the access to job opportunities. A globalized country like the US is characterized by an open economy that opens up opportunities in the business and technology sectors (Pevehouse & Goldstein, 2017). For instance, Lenovo, a Chinese Company, has one of its global headquarters in North Carolina in the US.
This opens up opportunities in the job market, which would not be accessible in a less globalized country. Another good example is Silicon Valley which has become the global headquarters for technology companies that come to leverage the availability of technology experts and services. The availability of technology consulting companies in the US particularly fascinates me because they provide information that I would need if I needed to invest in a technology startup.
Notably, globalization has desirable and undesirable impacts at the state and global levels. One of the undesirable systematic (global) impacts of globalization is that it leads to downward pressure on wages (Pevehouse & Goldstein, 2017). As more countries open their economies to the world, foreign companies seek to expand to countries where they can achieve efficient production and low production and labor costs. For instance, Apple has established most of its production plants in China due to access to low-cost labor.
While the company has gained, Americans have lost jobs in the process while American factory wage standards cannot pay the Chinese employees. At the state level, globalization has bolstered human rights, such as gender equality (Pevehouse & Goldstein, 2017). To align with global standards, countries have adopted policies that promote gender equality as they globalize.
In summary, globalization is characterized by economic integration, cultural exchange, and broad access to information and technology. In globalized countries with open economies, foreign companies can set up shop, creating employment opportunities for locals. Another principle characterized by globalized countries is access to information and advanced technology. Individuals and businesses can leverage such technology to innovate and expand their operations. Based on the levels of analysis framework, globalization contributes to downward wage pressures globally while positively contributing to the state of human rights domestically.
