Five Exemplary Leadership Practices

Firstly, exemplary leaders should model the way for their juniors. They must set clear-cut values that will guide employees in executing their day-to-day tasks (Posner, 2017). Such guiding principles must represent the values of a leader and those of the organization and society. For instance, US leaders working in China-based companies must positively represent the Chinese culture even if they are not Chinese. That will inspire the rest of the employees to respect societal and organizational values. Influential leaders must grasp where their organization is coming from and where it is headed (Posner, 2017). Also, the leader must enlist the rest of the employees in the shared vision. In the global business environment, business leaders must ensure their followers align with the overall organizational vision of the mother company.

Also, leaders should not be afraid of taking risks because of fear of mistakes. Most multinational organizations give global leaders the independence to pursue opportunities to advance the organization’s interests in the global environment. Lastly, good leaders must be willing to enable others to act. Recognizable organizational success is often a result of collaboration and teamwork. Global leaders must be at the center of fostering cooperation and building trust.

Cultural Differences and Their Impact on Leadership Styles

According to (2020), hierarchical differences are the most impactful cultural differences in the global business environment. Hierarchy is valued in Latin America and Asian countries. Here, employees are expected to address top-ranking managers in a particular way. Also, communication styles among different cultures affect leadership styles. In Latin America and Asia, even non-oral cues such as body movements mean a lot (Ly, 2020). That is different from low-context Western countries, where the emphasis is only given to words. Another difference in leadership styles involves risk-taking. Leaders from conservative societies in Asia and Latin America tend to be risk-avoidant. However, their counterparts from the Western world are risk-loving and flexible.

Attributes for US-based Leaders

The Western-world culture dominates the US, which comes with unique expectations for leaders. Key leadership expectations for US-based companies include possession and articulation of vision (Team, 2019). Also, US leaders should be expected to be willing to take risks. Finally, leaders need to exhibit sensitivity to followers’ needs.

Question

According to Posner (2017), “Leadership is not about personality; it’s about behavior.” In a global market, this statement may not be completely accurate. Chamorro-Premuzic & Sanger (2016) claim that depending on the cultural context, behavioral tendencies may be an asset or a weakness and that “good leadership is largely personality in the right place.” In some cultures and regions throughout the world, direct communication is seen as unnecessarily harsh, and the ‘straight-shooting leader’ might not be appreciated for their leadership style while the diplomatic leader would experience greater success. Leadership styles may clash with the culture and beliefs about the qualities that leaders must display to be considered effective and worth listening to.

Global Leadership

In a global economy and world, success could best be measured by the ability of leaders to change and adapt their styles to fit with the expected leadership traits of the culture for which they are working. In addition to the regional culture, it is just as important to take into account the culture of the individual organization. Successful leaders can often redefine the culture, to some extent, to be a reflection of their own personality (Chamorro-Premuzic & Sanger, 2016).

In this Discussion, you will examine the “5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership” from Kouzes and Posner and consider them in relation to a global audience. You will also consider the role of culture and the impact that it has on leaders and how U.S.-based companies might develop global leaders.

**List 3 cultural differences and what impact they might have on leaders (e.g., operating outside your ethnicity).
**How might companies located in the U.S. develop global leaders based on 3–5 desired attributes?
