Generational Diversity

 Generational Diversity

The health and human service field includes workers from different generational groups. Every generational group has unique traits that influence how they relate with patients and other staff members, especially those from diverse generational groups. Baby boomers are born between 1946 and 1964 (Iqbal & Trevisan, 2022). As a millennial, I experience many differences in cultural practices and behaviour from the baby boomers. Baby boomers are stereotyped as hardworking, while millennials are said to be lazy. Baby boomers are independent and self-assured, while millennials are innovative yet unreliable and entitled. Characters of each generation must be considered for effective human service work (Iqbal & Trevisan, 2022). These generational differences affect both patients and healthcare workers. Since millennials are considered innovative, they must be assigned health and human resource work that requires innovation. Millennials must be trained on timekeeping and accountability to deliver on their roles. On the other hand, baby boomers are hardworking and majorly require less supervision. The supervision of millennials should be allocated to reliable and some baby boomers.

Working with multigenerational groups teaches one the importance of patience, tolerance, and understanding (Chowdhury et al., 2022). Through patience, I will be able to learn the different traits and behaviours brought about by every generation. I will educate other staff members in the human resource work on understanding the positive effects of each generation. Many negative stereotypes surrounding each generation can hinder human service work. I will work on this area of growth by learning about myself. Self-awareness will help me realize the effect of generational differences in my life. In addition, it will open my eyes to my bias toward other generations, such as the baby boomers. Essentially, self-awareness sparks an eagerness in individuals to learn about different generations.
