One of the facts I learned about the brain is that chronic stress in childhood can have damaging effects on one’s brain architecture, causing problems in mental and physical health as well as behavior and learning. This is commonly caused by childhood abuse or poverty. Another fact is that aspects like the seven sins of memory are good for one’s brain. For instance, the sin of transience is essential as it helps eliminate outdated information and creates room for new ones, enhancing behavioral flexibility (Richards & Frankland, 2017). I also learned the concept of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt its function and structure based on one’s environment throughout an individual’s life span (Schlinger, 2015). This means that the brain continues growing and enables people to indulge in activities that enhance their well-being.
I believe that studying the brain enhances the understanding of certain behaviors and functions as observed in all human beings and can also help in understanding the differences in behavior. For instance, studying the brain of an individual whose left hemisphere has been damaged can explain why they have no damage in their spatial ability, creativity, and artistic skills but have significant trouble writing and reading as well as organizing and planning (Raja et al., 2010).
I would be interested in studying Parkinson’s disease, which is a central nervous system disorder that wrecks movement, often manifesting through tremors. It is important to note that Parkinson’s disease is currently incurable, and its cause is unknown. However, individuals with the disease can still lead a quality life. Loss of smell and small handwriting could be early signs of the disease (Bottaro, 2021).
