Fundamentals of Physical Activity 1- Heart Rate
Heart rate refers to the number of heartbeats measured in one minute. The normal heart rate ranges between 60 beats to 100 beats in one minute. Children, especially neonates and infants, have heart rates that are often higher than adults. Essentially, a lower heart rate shows that the functions of the heart are efficient. Besides, a lower heart rate at rest is a sign of cardiovascular fitness. For instance, in otherwise normal athletes, their resting heart rate can be around 40 beats in a minute. In the clinical setting, the heart rate is measured by placing the thumb over an artery and counting the felt beats in one minute. Alternatively, the heart rate can also be measured using the patient monitor.
Conversely, several factors can influence the heart. The factors may include age, physical activity, history of smoking, cardiovascular disease, air temperature, emotions, general body size, and medications, among others (Benson & Connolly, 2019). As stated previously, fitness has a great impact on the heart rate. Currently, in most fitness centers, cardioprotective exercises have been integrated into the training done. Cardioprotective exercises are usually meant to keep the heart healthy and are preferred for obese people who are at risk of getting cardiovascular diseases. According to Lippi et al. (2020), physical exercise is advised for the prevention of various cardiovascular disorders. With routine exercises, cardiovascular diseases can be prevented. However, during the exercise, it is important to monitor the heart rate. When the heart rate is too high, one should slow down, and when the heart rate is too low, one may be required to accelerate their exercise. In this circumstance, the heart rate functions to determine the intensity of physical exercise.
