Importance of Individuals’ Definition of Health and Health Problems

The definition of health is complex and sometimes very confusing. This is because health describes several entities, including the healthcare system, healthcare philosophy, and healthcare costs, among others. Therefore, healthcare workers responsible for health promotion should and must understand the definition of health for their sake and their clients (Edelman, 2018). A better understanding of the definition of health can improve healthcare quality and the outcome of health promotion.

Implications for Advanced Practice Nurse

Understanding the definition of health as the person’s well-being socially, psychologically, emotionally, spiritually, and environmentally helps the advanced practice nurse understand the role of other factors in health. According to Edelman (2018), the view of health in terms of four paradigms includes person, illness, environment, and nursing care. This will further help nurses appreciate the role of health education and other promotion services in improving the health outcomes of the patients.

Health Theoretical Model of Interest

There are four theoretical health models, including the clinical model, adaptive model, role performance model, and eudaimonic model. Of interest to me is the eudaimonistic model that defines health in terms of a person’s social, physical, environmental, spiritual, and psychological well-being (Tchouaffi & Ndipho, 2020). According to Edelman (2021), the ideas in this model match those of the integrative mechanisms of therapy, such as the National Institute of Health, which is currently the most used worldwide. The model helps patients appreciate the meaning of being alive despite suffering from a chronic illness such as cancer. Unlike the clinical model, where clients only seek medical services when they have signs of illness, the eudaimonistic motivates clients and improves how they view the healthcare provider. In addition, the model also supports health promotion services.
