Forming Relationships With Families

Forming Relationships With Families

Good communication skills practice aids in developing a trusting relationship between the physician and the patient and allows for a better comprehension of the patient’s difficulties. This leads to better diagnosis and management of the patient’s condition. Increased adherence to treatment and improved healthcare quality are desired results if both parties are satisfied with the consultation and management (Amoah et al., 2018). A competent communicator truly listens to patients, understands their issues and questions, and responds in a way that the patients will comprehend.

Communication in nursing can be difficult, and it is common to convey or receive inaccurate messages. It is critical to understand the significant components of the communication process, how to enhance nursing abilities, and the various problems that can arise from communication failures.

Modern nurses are overworked, which causes them to lack communication skills. Long shifts for nurses can create weariness, which reduces their focus, efficacy, and ability to interact effectively with patients and employees. Nurses today must spend unnecessary time completing repetitive documentation in many locations, searching for supplies, wearing multiple hats, and performing other jobs.

The third reason is a shortage of nurses. Some more sick patients take up much of the nurses’ time every year. As a result, they have very little time with other patients. The nurses may be doing their jobs but failing to connect with the patients. Consider a nurse approaching a patient’s bedside to empty an indwelling urine catheter. When she arrived, she didn’t make eye contact and proceeded to drain the catheter, note the details on his fluid balance chart, and walk away. She didn’t say anything during the process. This example demonstrates the importance of communication skills in patient care. He would have missed out on the chance to ask a question. It would have been an excellent time to glance at the patient and perhaps inquire about his feelings. Poor nonverbal communication results in poor nurse-patient communication as well.

Communication breakdowns develop when the nurse and the patient speak different first languages. Idioms and frames of reference in one language may have shades of meaning that do not exist in another. Mispronunciation or improper signing may be deceptive to the nurse or the patient, causing the patient to lose trust in the nurse. This issue typically affects older and international patients (Albahri et al., 2018). Because of linguistic barriers, nurses and patients cannot communicate with one another.

Poor communication is also a result of the level of power in hospitals. In hospitals, hierarchies increase the possibility of poor communication emerging at some level or another within the vertical power structure. Fear is the primary source of this communication breakdown, yet a hierarchical power structure in hospitals is not wrong. It simply means inadequate communication can lead to discrimination within the medical hierarchy.
