Finding Meaning in the Humanities- A Personal and Professional Exploration
The importance of humanities studies in the field of health professions
Humanities such as art can help nurses improve their observation skills. Individuals must take the time to observe art in order to understand it. Observation skills are important in nursing because they allow nurses to engage patients without making assumptions. [MAR18 l 1033]. A topic like literature can help my career by forcing me to consider different points of view and approaches to my work. As a nurse, for example, I work with people from various cultures, religions, beliefs, and opinions. As a result, I must treat my patients while keeping their preferences and opinions about certain procedures in mind. Furthermore, a topic like art helps me to be creative by appreciating diversity, just as artists use different strategies and colors in a painting to create an aesthetic painting.
One aspect of the humanities that is important in my personal life is the ability to be open to new ideas. For example, art is demonstrated by the artist’s ability to demonstrate unique talent, which presents new ideas. When life experiences perplex me, I am able to make decisions and become innovative. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, for example, depicts a large group of people relaxing in a park[CITATION Rus19 l 1033]. Shade and color are used in the painting to depict how people spend their afternoon on that island. The reliance on details allows me to generate new ideas, which I can then translate into creative solutions or strategies.
The Mona Lisa, on the other hand, is an example of art that depicts harmony among numerous entities, as identified in the painting. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that despite having different people with different skills and capacities, we can work together and succeed.
