What is the FLE content area you are addressing?

Family life Education program highlights families’ most important roles in society. They are considered fundamental because they significantly contribute to developing stronger relationships with institutions such as educational, religious, government, and vocational entities. Further, they help better comprehend children’s affiliation in the family. At the same time, children can benefit from family education programs as they can develop much-needed communication skills and interpersonal relationships with these institutions (Haslam et al., 2016). As such, the family life education program under review will focus on parental education and guidance. More specifically, the topic aims at understanding parent-children relationships and parenting styles and behaviors. This will be coupled with understanding how parents treat their children and how this can affect them in the future. As such, the program will raise awareness about the different styles that can be used to parent children and the possible effect that arise from using any of them.

Of all the needs that individuals and families have, the topic of parent education and guidance was selected because parents must understand how they can teach, influence and guide children and adolescents. This will also focus on changing the dynamic, nature, and need of children-parent relationships across the lifespan (Saunders et al., 2015). Individuals must understand parenting rights and responsibilities, parent-children relationships, variation in parent solutions, changing parenting roles, and parenting practices and processes.

Why do you feel there is a need for this kind of program?

There is a need for this kind of Parental Education and Guidance Program because the problem with children today is with their parents. Few children develop so much love and unnecessary attention to their children that they forget to guide them as they grow. There is a consensus among the experts that there is a serious disturbance in the development and growth when children are deprived of discipline and assurance that their behavior matters and has an effect. Today, parents are not giving children messages indicating they are charged (Haslam et al., 2016). Most children are not provided with the required parental support and money to allow them to develop a mature personality. This is a prominent feature in schools and homes, not to mention other institutions. Also, many parents do not seem to understand that their parenting styles significantly and directly affect their children’s life. They are unaware that people can be raised with a strong belief about parenting, which means they can focus on the inappropriate use of physical punishment, emotional neglect, and what is referred to as a parental role, asking too much from children (Rossi, 2009).

Can you point to any similar existing programs? How will yours be different or better?

 Preventing program is a similar program designed to avoid developing serious behavior or emotional problems in children and adolescents. It focuses on ensuring parents acquire the most suitable parenting skills before problems develop.

However, the current Parent Education and Guidance Program is better because it focuses on teaching parents effective, safe, and non-violent discipline strategies that can prevent children’s negative behavioral and emotional problems (Rossi, 2009). Also, it is broader because it cooperates with topics such as rights and responsibilities, parent-children relationships, variation in parent solutions, changing parenting roles, and practices and processes. Additionally, it has a range of variants that can be used as needed to prevent problems in schools and homes. It takes a blended approach that targets the whole family.

Goals of the Program: what do you hope participants gain by participating?

 The goal of the program is to ensure parent understands the most effective parenting styles and that how they choose to treat their children have significant psychological effects (Grindal et al., 2016). Another aim is to make parents acquire parenting skills and behaviors that pospositively impact school achievement, self-esteem, and behavior and cognitive development (Grindal et al., 2016). As such, this program is focused on providing parents with support and information to help them become competent.

Target audience: families, kids, teachers, siblings? Why do you think this is the right audience?

The program will target parents: mothers, fathers, and teachers. This is the right audience because these individuals are constantly in contact with children. The program can teach them to respond consistently and appropriately to children, for instance, by praising them. Also, it will teach them some of the strategies they can use to manage difficult behaviors, such as the use of time out and active parent participation during training (Grindal et al., 2016). In addition, parents and teachers must understand how to interact with children positively by learning the importance of non-disciplinary interactions with children using skills that promote positive parent or teacher-child relationships.

Format: face-to-face meetings (one or more?), online, phone, booklet, blog, newsletter, video?

At first, the program will be conducted face-to-face through a workshop held at a local community school. A group of six to eight parents will attend at the time. The program will take five days. The session will take three hours for each group. Providing refreshments such as bottled water, punch, and sodas will be imperative. After most, if not all, parents in the community acquire the initial information about the best parenting styles, they will be supplied with a digital newsletter twice a month to provide them with new information, parenting approaches, and a reminder of what has been learned previously to make sure the information sticks and can be used effectively.

Why do you think this is the right format?

 Face-to-face discussion at the start of the program is critical because this will allow parents to ask important questions, which the facilitators will handle professionally. At the same time, the workshop will be a great way of raising awareness about the program. Second, it will be imperative to use digital newsletters because most parents are busy and may not find time to the teaching at the workshop (Tramonte, Gauthier & Willms, 2015). The program will focus on the family system and family development theories. Both will show the target groups how to handle children and adolescents as a unit.  The best people that will make the program stronger are teachers. According to various scholars, family life education programs are nosedive because they do not dedicate much time to investigating how teachers can influence the behaviors of children (Tramonte, Gauthier & Willms, 2015). Strengthening and supporting the capacity of teachers to act like parents at school promotes enhancing children’s emotional and social development. An outcome this results in a positive outcome for the program.

What kind of funding will you need? Who might provide that funding?

 It will be important to get funds to support the works; as identified earlier, it will be imperative to have refreshments during this time. Also, it will be fundamental to acquire funding to ensure the dissemination of information digitally to parents. The most important people to fund the program will be from grand funding resources supporting community educational initiatives (Ponzetti, 2015). Further, seeking funding from a city agency and community institutions such as churches and schools will be important.

What do you think the strengths of your program will be? What will the weaknesses be?

 One of the program’s strengths will be that children will acquire the ability to become responsible and good citizens in society. This will make parenting easier for individuals in the community. Also, they will exhibit a positive attitude and social behaviors and grow to become productive and responsible members of society (Ponzetti, 2015).

Despite these merits, one of the disadvantages of the program is that it is possible that concerns about children could arise during the delivery of the parenting program. Also, parents’ mental health problems will be another problem because mental illness can affect the ability of the parent to perform optimally during training. Also, privacy and confidentiality will be another issue to take into consideration. As such, it will be fundamental to ensure that the workshop session will be done privately and that confidentiality can be maintained (Ponzetti, 2015). Since the program will be conducted in a group format, it will be crucial to explicitly state the privacy expectation at each group’s start.

After the program is over, how will you assess if it met its goals?

 The best way to evaluate the program’s effectiveness will be to conduct an empirical study after a year. It means there will be a need to carry out an interview-based survey where parents will be asked several questions and conclusions drawn from the information given, taking into account critical factors such as the parenting style adopted by the participant (Saunders et al., 2015).
