Explain how your communication plan will support your school’s mission and vision statements.

The communication plan will support my school’s mission statement by ensuring that every student and family who walks onto our campus and into my classroom feels welcomed and valued for who and what they are as an individual—at the same time, supporting my school’s vision statement by creating solid relationships with each family that allows us to communicate effectively and collaborate effectively on ideas and solutions to problems to ensure their student’s success.

Discuss methods to build appropriate family relationships based on your school demographics.

A practical method to build appropriate family relationships is to communicate with them often; regular communication allows for collaboration, acknowledgment of accomplishments, recognizing problems and finding solutions quickly and effectively (WGBH Educational Foundation, 2014). Additionally, it is equally important to communicate the positives and negatives with parents, as parents will better understand their students’ behaviors and gains (WGBH Educational Foundation, 2014).

Identify 2-3 specific methods you will use to regularly communicate with families, including at least one-way using technology.

Often phone calls home is reserved for problems, therefore by making phone calls from the very first week of school, even before the first week, by introducing yourself or inviting them to an open house, you are starting to build trust, support, and the sense of community (Trust, 2021). To regularly communicate with my students’ families, I will make phone calls at significantly less bi-weekly, creating a form to ensure I call all the families at least once in the allotted time frame. Additionally, I will engage with parents at drop-off and pick-up and keep a notebook on hand for any information that may be obtained. I will implement a weekly or monthly newsletter, depending on the needs of my students and families. In addition to the newsletter, I will regularly update my families and students on any changes or updates via email between newsletters. Finally, per campus regulations and space, I will set up an Information Board for important and upcoming events and happenings involving our classroom and campus.

Describe at least three events or activities you plan to include families.

The first event I plan to incorporate in my classroom to include families is to invite them to an Open House before the school year starts; that way, we can form strong relationships and communicate in person. It is also an excellent way to gather information and tidbits to help the child succeed in the classroom. The second is to ask for volunteers regularly, whether to read to the school as a whole, read to or with a student one-on-one, help prepare materials, and chaperone field trips. The idea will be to ensure they always feel welcomed and encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to be included in classroom activities. Finally, the third activity I plan on incorporating to have families will be to host family school lunches at least once a month or quarter.

Explain how you will collaborate with families to build a safe, positive learning climate of openness, mutual respect, and support.

I will collaborate with families from the first day and throughout the year to build a safe, welcoming, positive learning experience and a community of mutual respect and support. Additionally, I will treat each connection with the utmost importance and attention to ensure each parent, student, and family feels valued, respected, and supported in my classroom.
