Fairy Tale- Sleeping Beauty
According to Jewell (2022), humanities, which include, among other things, fairy tales, are involved in discovering the deeper meanings of life as it has been experienced and lived all over the world and in the course of the human race’s history. My choice of this topic is the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, based on a story about a young girl cursed by a witch to die on her 16th birthday. This curse is altered by a fairy who allows the princess to overcome the curse by falling into a deep sleep that can only be broken by a kiss of true love. This topic selection is based on the fairy tale’s relevance in the world today and its cultural significance.
Firstly, this storyline of a princess who needs saving has sparked controversy in recent years of it being sexist and painting women as the weaker sex, giving young girls the idea that they need to be rescued by men. While I support this idea, I also think the fairy tale has an overlooked side. Women have always been disadvantaged and are vulnerable to domestic violence, sexual abuse, discrimination, and having their rights taken away, like their dressing choices (Jonason & De Gregorio, 2022). In the fairy tale, the curse represents the issues that women face from a young age.
Secondly, numerous debates speak against the idea of a prince always saving the princess. While this is true, another perspective of the fairy tale is that women will only overcome these kinds of violence through support and understanding from men, yet men commit most of these crimes. As per most fairy tales, a prince is of noble character, kind, caring, protective, and cherishes women. The idea here is that if society raised such men, especially considering that men dominate society, then most of the challenges women have faced would never exist. Moreover, the idea of true love between a man and a woman should be pure instead of possessive, controlling, abusive, insecure, and untrusting. Finally, yet importantly, men should recognize the challenges that women experience and help fight them.
