Exploring the Impact and Interpretation of a Significant Dream- Personal Reflection and Analysis
One dream that has recurred more than three times is the dream of failing my final examinations in high school. In those dreams, I am always back in high school, writing my exams, and every time the results come, I have flunked them. I usually wake up tired after having such dreams, with my bed wet with sweat and tears. My friends and family ridicule me in those dreams, but the worst part is the self-loathing that I develop afterward. This causes me major anxiety. According to Sigmund Freud, dreams are expressions of individuals’ unconscious desires. Therefore, to understand a dream, one needs to analyze the manifest content or visible meaning of the dream to uncover the latent content meaning (Coon & Mitterer, 2013). Freud calls this type of dream an examination dream. He claims that these dreams represent the ineradicable punishment memories that people suffered as children for their misdeeds. They often come when individuals feel the burden of responsibility (Freud, 1900). When one is expected to take on a major task with high stakes (and the possibility of disgrace upon failure) the following day, one tends to experience these dreams. It shows the anxiety one experiences before a major decision (Wheel, 2022).
I believe that the interpretation of this dream is somewhat accurate. I have always been afraid of failure. The burden of responsibility and the consequent punishment represent these examination dreams (Freud, 1900) accurately. Olsen (2022) also states that such dreams could mean low self-confidence or low self-esteem. If one passes, then this can be resolved.
I think that the meaning behind these examination dreams is fear of failure and self-criticism regarding performance. Looking back, I see myself worked-up, and my fear of failure causes me not to perform well. However, these dreams remind me that I have always passed all the high-stakes exams; therefore, I unconsciously encourage myself by looking at the previous high-stakes exams and reminding myself that I succeeded in them.
