Desiree and Mia
In Désirée’s Baby, Desiree is limited in her role in society due to her ethnicity. In this case, Desiree is a loving and gentle person in nature. Desiree has a good life, is adopted by a wealthy family, and marries the man of her dreams, Armand, a wealthy slave owner. Armand and Desiree have a happy marriage, and Desiree fulfills her duties as a mother and wife, but her life falls apart when Armand implies that she is African American. Although Armand is happy about the baby boy, Armand accuses Desiree of being black (Chopin). Desiree suffers due to the possibility of herself and her son being African American, limiting her role in society. Amarna sends Desiree and her son out of his house, and instead of standing up for herself and her son, Desiree decides never to return. Her parents ask her to return to Valmonde, but she declines, disappearing with her son. Desiree decides not to give society the satisfaction of condemning her and her son. By ending her life and her son’s life, Desiree sets herself free from the mockery and pain of her husband and those close to her.
In Gender Queer, Mia experiences an identity crisis, and it limits her role in society. Mia cannot fully identify with herself due to her gender. As she grows, she discovers her interests that do not conform to society’s expectations. For example, Mia admires both men and women, and she hates her chest. Due to the crisis, Mia wishes to have breast cancer to get rid of her breasts. Mia prefers being called names such as Alex, Robin, and Taylor because they suit both sexes (Kobabe). Her identity crisis limits her role in society since she does not know how to deal with her feelings and live up to society’s expectations. Mia does not realize her potential since she withdraws herself. To push herself against the boundaries set by society, Mia struggles with coming out and lives with double standards seeking approval from society.
