Exploring Singapore Cultural Geography and Economy- Insights into Southeast Asia

The Republic of Singapore, a city, a state, and a nation, was colonized by Britain from 1824 to 1942 (McGrath 427). In 1942, the Japanese Empire conquered the nation, but this lasted for only three years, as the British took it back in 1945. As of 2020, the most dominant religion in Singapore was Buddhism, with a percentage of 33.2%, and Christianity came in the second position, with 18.1% of the population (McGrath 425).

The territorial configuration of Singapore is: Singapore is the continent of Asia in the Southeastern region. The country consists of one main island and a total of sixty-three satellite islands, islets, and another outlying islet (McGrath 427). Singapore is about 724.2 km2, with 98.57% of this area being land and 1.43% water. The country is located approximately eighty-seven miles north of the equator, coordinates 1º17´ N 103º 50´E (McGrath 428).

As of 2022, the gross national income per person in Singapore is projected to be approximately $61,000. Additionally, Singapore’s top exports, in order of highest grossing to lowest, are;  electrical equipment and devices, petroleum products, oil bunkers, office equipment and automatic data-processing technologies, and telecommunication and sound-recording and replicating devices (“Singapore (SGP) Exports, Imports, and Trade Partners | OEC” 1). Its top imports, from highest grossing to lowest, are; electrical machines and devices, petroleum and products, office equipment and automatic data-processing technologies, broadcasting and sound recording and duplicating devices, and miscellaneous manufactured articles (“Singapore (SGP) Exports, Imports, and Trade Partners | OEC” 1).

Moreover, one more important industry in Singapore not mentioned in the export section is the healthcare industry. The healthcare industry in Singapore is one of the best globally because it provides some of the most innovative healthcare services (Yong 5). There are not many agricultural activities in Singapore. Consequently, only about 0.701% of the labor workforce is in agriculture (“Singapore – Employment in Agriculture (% of Total Employment) – 2022 Data 2023 Forecast 1970-2020 Historical” 1). As for mining, there is very little to no mining as the country has no coal mines or any other special metals yet.
