Exploring Recurring Themes in Literature- Connections Across Poems and Stories

Question 1                                                                            

One of the common themes I see repeated throughout the literary readings this semester is change. I have seen this theme in various sections of the book The Latehomecomer: “In that camp, my mother learned about loneliness…. But they were all women and bonded by the same set of circumstances; they worked and lived together. They found food and shared, but each had their private thoughts and worries (Yang, p.27). This statement indicates the change in the author’s mother’s life after relocating to the refugee camp. Change is also evident in the literary text, There Will Come Soft Rains, by Ray Bradbury in the statement, “At ten o’clock the house began to die” (Bradbury, p.36). This statement marks explains the change in the house environment after ten o’clock.

Subsequently, the theme of change is repeated through so many works of literature because change creates a foundation for other events in a person’s life or their surroundings, thus aiding in the development of the plot in works of literature. The theme of change also speaks to us today because we live in a dynamic world where people’s way of life keeps changing due to technological advancements. The theme will continue to be important in the future because of the increase in innovation and technological advancements that are needed to solve the problems currently being faced by most societies in the world. Therefore, the change theme is timeless because it will continue to be relevant for a long time as long as there are problems that need to be solved.

Question 2

The article, Attitudes Toward Illegal Immigration and Exposure to Public Service and Commercial Broadcasting in France, Norway, and the United States, by Audun Beyer and Jörg Matthes reviews the relationship between political orientations, ideologies, and exposure to news from commercial and public service broadcasters and attitudes toward illegal immigration. The authors target policymakers in charge of making policies to prevent discrimination against immigrants. The authors want the readers to believe that exposure to commercial broadcasting contributes to negative attitudes toward illegal immigration and that public broadcasting promotes positive attitudes toward illegal immigration.

The claim that public broadcasting creates more positive attitudes toward illegal immigration benefits illegal immigrants because they can use public service broadcasting to expose the inhumane acts against them in detention and refugee camps and get help from the public. It is important for illegal immigrants to believe that public service broadcasting can help them publicize inhumane treatment so that they can use public service broadcasting to expose people who subject them to inhumane treatment and seek justice for those who are subjected to inhumane treatment.

Following this, the authors use the Marxist Criticism literary analysis. This connects with my paper’s goals because the goal of the paper focuses on a social issue.  Further, if I were talking to the author about their points, I would say yes to the point about the impact of public service broadcasting on people’s perceptions of illegal immigrants. I would agree that public service broadcasting leads to more positive attitudes toward illegal immigration because it publicizes the inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants, leading to sympathy from the public and willingness to help them. However, I would say no to the point that political orientation can be used to predict negative attitudes toward illegal immigration because the perception toward illegal immigrants is mainly influenced by the information that people access about the challenges faced by illegal immigrants and the impact of illegal immigration in society. I would also tell the authors that I agree with them that the complexity and quality of information, largely provided by the media, matters when public opinion toward immigration is shaped, but the reliability of the information provided by the media is more important.

Question 3

Illegal immigration has increased in most developed countries over the past decade because of the negative perceptions that create discrimination against immigrants in the legal migration process.
