Gender roles greatly influenced my childhood because they set specific expectations I was expected to meet. For instance, being the first-born male child placed me in a position where I was expected to take care of my siblings whenever my parents were not home. I was also expected to help my parents manage their business by running errands such as deliveries and accounting. I was also expected to protect my siblings from being bullied by other children in my neighborhood and help them sort out any issues they would be experiencing at home or school. For instance, during my childhood, I developed a passion for football because I used to participate in football competitions in the neighborhood on weekends. My passion for the sport influenced how I designed my room because I focused on pictures of famous football players and a jersey of one of my favorite players. My parents also bought me masculine gifts such as football balls, a baseball cap, and a tennis ball because they knew I was interested in sports. My father also expressed gender expectations through his approval of my choices. For instance, he approved my choice to join the football team in my school because football was a masculine sport that most of the males in my neighborhood were joining.
