Exploring Effective Leadership Styles and Traits for Executive Roles in Healthcare Organizations

One leadership style that would make me an ideal candidate for an executive position in a healthcare organization is the participative or democratic leadership style. This type of leadership is based on the Y-theory of motivation. Subsequently, the democratic leadership style would allow me to consult with my subordinates and decentralize the decision-making process for followers. This is in addition to facilitating open communication between my followers and me and inviting ideas, suggestions, and opinions when it comes to decision-making on a wide range of issues. One rationale for why I view this leadership style as appropriate largely stems from improved morale and reduced resistance to change among followers (Hilton, Arkorful & Martins, 2021).

Concerning these traits, the most fundamental trait I should portray as a leader is the maintenance of relationships. Chikeleze and Baehrend Jr (2017) affirm that detached leadership styles are not effective in helping organizations achieve their strategic objectives.  Notably, contemporary employee demands more personal relationships with their leaders before fully committing to their jobs. Subsequently, it is pertinent that I view each follower as a crucial component of the group. To maintain relationships, I must invest a significant amount of time in fostering lasting relationships with followers that ultimately culminate in commitment alongside loyalty from followers.

Other than that, I should be cognizant of my values and always ensure that my actions are following those values to realize the strategic objectives fully. This means that I must have a strong sense of right and wrong and allow these values to guide me when encountering ethical dilemmas within the workplace. For this reason, moral reasoning is another critical attribute that everyone in a leadership position should always have (Chikeleze & Baehrend Jr, 2017).
