Exploring Alternative Methods of Preventative Care- Spiritual, Pet, and Music Therapy
Alternative Prevention Measures
Music therapy is a promising treatment option to facilitate well-being and recovery. Music therapy is beneficial in the treatment of adolescents and children and is commonly used among patients with autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, mental health problems, disabilities, and neonatal care (Stegemann et al., 2019). Music therapy should be incorporated into patient care in a person-centered way, using different methods of tailored music experienced in a therapeutic relationship to promote health. The benefits of music therapy include: facilitating communication, social skills, emotional expression, relaxing or activating the patient, stimulating reflection and self-knowledge, and improving mood and general quality of life. Music therapy is also safe and easy to implement. However, Incidence (2020) notes that music therapy is also linked to increased anxiety in some cases, triggering of unwanted memories, and overstimulation.
Spirituality and religion play an important role in preventative care and can be used by anyone who considers themselves spiritual. According to Isaac, Hay, and Lubetkin (2016), spirituality might influence behavior, health attitudes, and choices such as dietary choices and alcohol consumption and can also enhance communication with care providers and promote the general well-being of the individual. Spiritual care needs to be incorporated into patient care by engaging the patient in a dialogue about how their spiritual beliefs may inhibit or promote behavior. Having a patient’s spiritual history can help the provider have a context of the patient’s experience with their illnesses and offer opportunities for discussing interventions that can promote or bar certain health actions. Isaac, Hay, and Lubetkin (2016) claim that the problem with spiritual care is that there are no clear guidelines about providing spiritual care, there is a lack of time, education, and training in spirituality, and concerns about offending patients as boundary violations are possible.
Art therapy is a technique that is commonly used to treat individuals with psychological disorders and improve their mental health. It is considered useful in enabling individuals to explore emotions, cope with stress, work on social skills, boost their self-esteem and develop self-awareness (Cherry, 2020). Art therapy involves coloring, painting, and sculpting, among others, and is suitable for individuals of all ages. However, there is inconclusive evidence regarding the effectiveness of art therapy. Furthermore, the art therapist might be vulnerable to misinterpretation of the specific piece of art by the patient, barring the patient from discovering what the art means to them and drowning its efficacy. Art therapy can be incorporated in patient care through the use of an art therapist who helps patients cope with mental health and emotional problems by expressing their feelings and emotions in the form of art.
