Evolving Family Dynamics- Understanding the Disintegration of the Joint Family System and Its Impact on Aging and Long-Term Care
In the interview, a participant stated that his grandmother left his children every day to go to an urban setting to work to take care of her children. Therefore, urbanization and the changing roles in the family brought disintegration. Another interviewee stated that women quickly realized that they could not rely on their husbands every day. Most of the interviewees held that women were not fulfilled with their domestic roles. With the rise in education, they had to pursue previously male-dominated jobs and education careers, leaving their large families.
The youth initially took care of the aging, but they are now scarcely involved because they are focused on pursuing education and careers and forming new family structures. Besides, many interviewees agreed that women were mainly responsible for caring for aging people. Currently, they are attached to the labor force, leaving the aging people by themselves. This reduced the lifespan of the aging and long-term care, resulting in the rise of organizations and pharmaceutical companies taking care of them. The growing need for these services prompted health service organizations to redefine their structure and roles to include the needs and long-term care for the aging.
The long-term care systems have become overburdened as the aging population now enjoys living lavishly, yet some have not prepared for retirement (Little, 2012). The elderly now live longer because of sustaining healthcare innovations. They need medical support to live active years. Thus, the strength of the current long-term care system is the invention of new medicine, growth in research, innovation, and increased economic growth among pharmaceuticals and research companies (OpenStax, 2017). Weaknesses include the inability to care for all aging populations because of increased demand, the burden of caring for the population that is not active in the labor sector, and the population’s increased spending.
