Many countries, including the United States of America, want to regulate social media platforms. Some examples of regulations that can be implemented are: if a story by an individual is confirmed to be false, the social network should display a correction to them. Accounts of news organizations controlled by the states should be labeled. It should limit the number of times a single message can be forwarded to large groups. On the news feed, the network should recommend why the content is being recommended to the user (Goanta & Ranchordás, 2020). The use of advertising messages that are micro-targeting should be limited. Any wrong or misinformed news should be automatically deleted from the platforms by the companies. Social media regulation is good and important, but several things come up every time the topic is addressed. The regulation can interfere with the freedom of speech. The question of who will define what is a miscommunication on the platform arises.  Regulation may stifle people’s flow of ideas and their right to believe what they want.

There are several ethical concerns on the current social media networks. Online groups are useful to society, but the problem comes when people’s information is overshared. In real life, we interact with the people we know, but the information is out there on social media, and there is a possibility of a breach of confidentiality. Dishonesty in advertising and marketing of products on social media (Khan, 2015). Some business owners make sales online, but some are scammers. They can advertise something that does not exist or sell goods whose quality is poor compared to what they are advertising. It misleads and misinforms customers and sometimes cons them of their money. Some pages on social media platforms have a Contact Me icon on the websites that is not secure.  Some people, just because they have the freedom to speech, they post insensitive messages on the platforms. Some messages or comments can be racist and harsh.

Each social media platform has a culture. Since the inception of Facebook, some values have been echoed in the platform. Some of them are bold; people are encouraged to make bold decisions even though sometimes they may be wrong. It’s risky to take no risk. Focusing on impact, the focus should be on solving problems (Hansen et al., 2010). Everyone on Facebook should be good at finding big problems to solve or work on. Moving faster is an important culture on Facebook. Moving fast is important in learning faster and building things. An open world is better; hence, Facebook is open to making sure that people are informed. The mission of Facebook is to make the world connected and open. Twitter exists on some principles, like promoting healthy conversations. Twitter is a platform for what is happening; hence it has to be credible and reliable to earn people’s trust. The information on Twitter is straightforward.  It believes in moving fast, being free, and having fun.

Social media networks are the most used sources of information in the current society. While the networks have made life easier for people, there are ethical concerns that they face. There is a thought of regulating the platforms and the information in them, but the means of regulations can be questioned. Each society has a unique culture that it has been founded on and tries to achieve. The culture identifies and makes each platform unique and helpful to different categories of people.

Where do you get your news? Start by going to one major news site’s FACEBOOK page (CNN, MSNBC, FOX, etc.) Try another different news site’s TWITTER feed, and third, choose another social media site such as Reddit, Pinterest, or another (preferably one you use, if there is one).

Analyze the sites in a 3-5 page total paper. In your analysis, be sure to include the following:
