Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
The rationale for developing this annotated bibliography was to review how the advancements in healthcare-related technologies in the face of a pandemic crisis, the need to improve patient monitoring, and the delivery of collaborative care in rural areas have changed how healthcare is delivered to where it is needed. I found that telehealth is a healthcare technology that has become essential in nursing and healthcare settings, creating this shift in patient care delivery. This annotated bibliography reviews available evidence on the application of telehealth in nursing and healthcare, its impacts on provider and patient satisfaction, accessibility of healthcare services even in remote areas, and barriers and opportunities for the implementation of telehealth in both rural and urban care settings. I searched online databases such as the Wiley online library, PubMed Central, and Science Direct for full peer-reviewed articles. I also used Google Scholar and Mendeley search engines utilizing search terms and phrases such as “Telehealth,” “impacts of telehealth,” “telehealth adoption factors,” and “telehealth in rural and urban healthcare.”

This article is an integrative review of available evidence on the satisfaction of patients and healthcare providers with the use of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors note that events and situations related to the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the safety measures and other measures taken to control the spread of the virus, including quarantine, lockdowns, and social distancing, impacted how healthcare was delivered. People under quarantine with acute and chronic health issues still needed medical attention. This created a necessity for the method to continue with the delivery of healthcare services throughout the pandemic, leading to the increased use of telehealth. The integrative review of current evidence from 23 peer-reviewed articles found that the increased adoption and use of telehealth in health care services was driven by the necessity to overcome the barriers created by the pandemic. Telehealth presents an opportunity for nurses and patients to continually deliver and access healthcare services, supporting the continuity of care irrespective of existing barriers. As per the author’s conclusions, patients and providers, in general, have increased satisfaction with the use of telehealth in unprecedented times, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a majority are willing to continue with the use of telehealth services in the future. This integrative review is important to nursing practice and general healthcare practice as it provides empirical evidence of how the use of telehealth services can improve the levels of patient and provider interaction and satisfaction. It also creates these outcomes using telehealth as a basis for the adoption of telehealth in healthcare.

This article presents a comprehensive assessment of the adoption of telehealth in rural and urban hospital settings. It aims to identify the barriers related to telehealth’s enhanced capabilities in internal and external patient engagement and health information exchange (HIE) capacity. The authors argue that telehealth has health information technology (HIT) system capabilities that impact care coordination, system integration in care delivery, patient and care outcomes, and cost of care, and can improve patient engagement in care. There exist differences in the degree of telehealth adoption in rural and urban settings. Rural adoption of telehealth is minimal while higher with urbanicity. The major barriers to adoption in rural areas are the lack of systems with the capacity to support health information access and exchange, lack of demand, user capacity, awareness, and interoperable infrastructure, and smaller size of the facility. In urban centers, barriers include hospital and hospital system characteristics, quality of available telehealth systems, hospital capacity, and application areas. This article is important in healthcare practice settings aiming to implement telehealth services as it highlights the barriers to implementing and tapping into the full potential of telehealth. The evidence can be used to navigate these barriers to achieve full implementation of telehealth in healthcare.

This article is an integrative review of existing literature and evidence on the impacts of telemedicine and telehealth in nursing homes. The review focuses on how this technology impacts access to specialty care, improvement of care models, and patient outcomes. The authors note that COVID-19 negatively impacted nursing homes’ abilities to deliver care as needed. This accelerated the adoption of telemedicine and telehealth in such nursing home care settings. Telemedicine and telehealth have the potential to support continuous patient monitoring, early detection of health changes, and support care providers in delivering services remotely. The authors conclude that telemedicine and telehealth significantly impact the efficiency of consulting and delivering geriatric, psychiatric, and palliative care. Additionally, delivery of care over telemedicine and telehealth in nursing homes reduces the need for emergency care, admission and readmission rates, and physical risks associated with travelling. The technologies also significantly impact financial savings, processes, and experiences of elderly patients and clinicians. Generally, telemedicine and telehealth improve monitoring costs and workflow. This article is resourceful in supporting the implementation of telemedicine and telehealth in practice as it provides the perspectives of clinicians, residents, and the family and the outcomes of the use of the technologies.

This article presents a systematic review of literature and evidence on the impact of telehealth use in rural settings on the satisfaction of patients. The authors compared the patient’s self-reported satisfaction levels with access to care services using telehealth with the standard in-person therapy for patients living in rural areas. Based on existing evidence, the authors argue that there is a need to adopt efficient systems and approaches to improve care delivery to people with limited access, such as in rural and remote areas. The article presents telehealth as a tool that can support healthcare service delivery and research in rural areas. From the review of the evidence, the authors conclude that telehealth supports access to healthcare services and continuous education of both rural residents and healthcare providers within rural settings. Reviewing evidence related to the use of telehealth services and rural patient experiences within various care practices such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and in speech-language therapy, the authors note that telehealth improves the satisfaction of patients. This article is resourceful in supporting the use of telehealth, especially for remote care, as it shows how beneficial telehealth is in the delivery of care services with a focus on patient outcomes.
Conclusion
In conclusion, telehealth use in healthcare service delivery significantly impacts all care settings. Despite the existence of some barriers in both rural and urban care settings, telehealth is a promising healthcare delivery tool that will significantly improve the efficiency of accessing and delivering care, save costs of access and delivery of care, reduce admissions due to early detection of deterioration in health condition, and improve patient and provider experiences and interactions within the process of care.

Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
Introduction
Before you begin to develop the assessment, you are encouraged to complete the Annotated Bibliography Formative Assessment. Completing this activity will help you succeed with the assessment and count towards course engagement.
Rapid changes in information technology go hand-in-hand with progress in quality healthcare delivery, nursing practice, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. The following are only a few examples of how the healthcare field uses technology to provide care to patients across multiple settings:
Patient monitoring devices.
Robotics.
Electronic medical records.
Data management resources.
Ready access to current science.
Technology is essential to the advancement of the nursing profession, maintaining quality care outcomes, patient safety, and research.
This assessment will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of how technology can enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. You will prepare an annotated bibliography on technology in nursing. A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.
Preparation
To successfully complete this assessment, perform the following preparatory activities:
Select a SINGLE direct or indirect patient care technology that is relevant to your current practice or of interest to you. Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and the patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients. Electronic thermometers or pulse oximeters are examples of direct patient care technologies. Indirect patient care technologies, on the other hand, are those employed on behalf of the patient. They do not require interaction or direct contact between the nurse and the patient. A handheld device for patient documentation is an example of an indirect patient care technology. Examples of topics to consider for your annotated bibliography include:
Delivery robots.
Electronic medication administration with barcoding.
Electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support.
Patient sensor devices/wireless communication solutions.
Real-time location systems.
Remote patient monitoring.
Artificial intelligence.
Telehealth.
Telestroke.
Tele-icu.
Tele-psychiatry.
Tele-genetics.
Workflow management systems.
