Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing

Technological advances in healthcare have considerably shaped healthcare operationalizations. Telehealth is an example of health information technology that has found considerable use in modern healthcare. I chose telehealth because of its ability to reach diverse communities and bridge gaps to care access accustomed to proximity. This topic is of interest to me because of how it facilitates remote caring. I did a web search on telehealth topics under the themes of benefits, barriers, effectiveness, and prospects. This search was done on reputable databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. The search terms used were “telehealth,” “benefits of telehealth,” and “barriers to telehealth use.” This paper details four resources on telehealth under the themes of effectiveness, benefits, barriers to use, and prospects of its use.

This quantitative research paper assesses whether telemedicine and telemonitoring are clinically useful in monitoring COVID-19 patients under home-based care. Findings from the articles reveal that these technologies are associated with lowered mortality rates and pressure on hospital services accustomed to the growing number of patients requiring health services. It highlights how healthcare information technologies such as telehealth have positively impacted care approaches. By enabling remote caring, these devices facilitate contact between patients and their caregivers. This enables them to have timely information on the prognosis of the disease and lessens the burden that would have otherwise resulted from hospital visitations. Telehealth maintains relevance to nurses and other members of interdisciplinary teams as it enables them to contact their patients without physically being with them. This provides an easy yet efficient platform for monitoring patients and informing any adjustments to the care plan. This resource was selected because it details how telehealth was used to maintain contact with COVID-19 patients during the pandemic. It gives insight into how this technology can be leveraged to provide care for other patient groups.

This review article analyses the benefits of telehealth in increasing access to care. The recent covid pandemic gave insight into the utility of telehealth in bridging care gaps accustomed to poor access to care. At the height of the pandemic, when movement restrictions were apparent, telehealth provided an efficient, effective, cheap, and convenient way to access healthcare services. Telehealth remains beneficial in enhancing access to care. It bridges gasp attributable to remote geographical localities and high logistical costs. Telehealth ensures patients’ safety and quality care by ensuring that patients are in contact with their caregivers. This eliminates safety compromises that may result from self-treatment and not accessing care services. This article maintains relevance to nurses and other members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams as it informs them on how they can utilize technology to improve care to patients. This will be in alignment with their ethical mandate of fairness and beneficence. This article was selected because it highlights how the traditional problem of access to care affecting many societies can be addressed using health information technologies.

Barriers to Telehealth Use

This review article outlines the barriers and challenges to telemedicine use among persons with disabilities. Challenges to telehealth use that requires an address for enhanced effectiveness of their use include operational challenges, legislative and regulatory barriers, infrastructural barriers, and communication barriers. Barriers to telehealth use remain a safety and quality compromise in remote caring. These barriers may hinder the effective use of this technology and may be contributory to the lack of care services for persons unable to access healthcare services physically. This article maintains relevance to nurses and other members of interdisciplinary teams as it informs them of areas to address for them to effectively use telehealth. Knowing telehealth use and access to telehealth devices may enable them to facilitate care for their patients. This article was selected because it highlights areas that require an address for telehealth use to be optimized. Addressing barriers to telehealth may enable the realization of its benefits to healthcare.

Telehealth use has gained momentum with recent increases in telecare services, revealing its potential to provide patient-centered, high-quality, and efficient care. As the healthcare landscape tends towards technology, telehealth may provide a far-reaching, cheap, efficient, and effective alternative for healthcare provision. Telehealth is expected to promote patient safety and quality of care. It provides a platform for care provision in the future. Its use will bridge care gaps for persons living in remote areas, provide a groundwork for patient monitoring and maintain contact between patients and their caregivers. This article maintains relevance to nurses and other members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams. It helps them to position themselves strategically to fully exploit telehealth. Knowing that telehealth use will persist in the future, they are likely to better their knowledge of telehealth to enable them to excel in their future roles. This article was selected because it shows the position of telehealth in the modern care setting and its prospects. It informs the need to better understand this technology and how it can be leveraged to better care provision.

Summary of Annotated Elements

The annotated publications detail varying aspects of telehealth. These include the effectiveness of its use, benefits, barriers, and the prospects of telehealth. Findings from the literature point to the effectiveness of telehealth in providing healthcare services, and the benefits of using telehealth. The publications also highlight areas that require addressing to enhance the effectiveness of using telehealth. Findings on prospects of telehealth give the anticipated position of telehealth in the future. These articles thus offer an all-around analysis of telehealth, revealing all the need to know and how it can be leveraged to enter care provision.

Several organizational factors influence telehealth use. Organizational policies that encourage telehealth are beneficial in promoting its use. Telehealth also has resource considerations since installing telehealth devices is costly. Additional organizational resources may be required to facilitate the availability of these devices. Further resources may also be needed to train staff on their use. All these factors influence the overall utilization of telehealth.

Implementation and use of telehealth are warranted in all healthcare systems. These technologies maintain effectiveness in improving clinical outcomes. As Casariego-Vales et al. (2021) report, telehealth lowers mortality rates and lessens the pressure on hospitals. Telehealth is also beneficial in lowering care gaps accustomed to poor access (Hoffman, 2020). This is particularly beneficial for patients living in remote areas and patients monitoring. The effectiveness of telehealth in improving clinical outcomes, coupled with its beneficial effects in enhancing access to care underpins the need for implementing its use in healthcare.

This care technology is appropriate. Telehealth has positive impacts on patients, caregivers, and the healthcare organization in its entirety. To patients, telehealth enhances clinical outcomes. It also enhances access to health and healthcare services (Casariego-Vales et al., 2021). This technology is thus likely to enhance patients’ satisfaction with the care services provided to them. To the healthcare organization, telehealth lowers the pressure from frequent hospital visitation by facilitating access to health and healthcare services for their patients (Hoffman, 2020). To healthcare providers, telehealth allows them to monitor their patients remotely and lessens the pressure that would have otherwise been mounted on them by hospital visitation. This is likely to increase their output and overall productivity.
