Everyday Leadership at Walmart
One person in our store who is not in a formal position of authority but whom I believe demonstrates leadership.
The cashier at our Walmart store is not in a formal position of authority, but I believe he demonstrates leadership. The primary roles of the cashier at the store include answering customer questions about store policies, ongoing promotions and merchandise within the store, processing payments for products purchased in the store, and scanning coupons.
How the cashier demonstrates leadership.
The cashier demonstrates leadership by resolving misunderstandings among the workers at the store and guiding them on what they should do to improve the store’s performance. The cashier also demonstrates leadership by recognizing employees who perform well at the store to keep them motivated. For example, he introduced a culture where we hold a brief staff meeting at the end of the month where he acknowledges the efforts made by employees towards improving the store’s performance by mentioning their names and contributions to the store.
How consistency, helping others, and a positive attitude add to leader effectiveness
Consistency improves a leader’s effectiveness by improving the skills needed to complete leadership roles. Helping others enables a leader to establish a good relationship with followers, thus increasing their effectiveness by applying the feedback they receive concerning their leadership style and decisions. A positive attitude also enables a leader to embrace other people’s recommendations, thus enhancing leadership effectiveness.
What I can do to be a better leader in our Walmart store
One of the things I can do to become a good leader in my Walmart store is to familiarize myself with the cultures of different employees at the store. According to Ahmad & Saidalavi (2019), cultural intelligence is vital in establishing leadership effectiveness by improving the relationship between a leader and followers. The diverse nature of the workforce at our Walmart store requires cultural intelligence to enhance collaboration in meeting the organization’s goals. The second thing that I can do is improve my communication skills. This will help me become an effective leader by clearly communicating a shared vision to all employees at the store.

Question
When we hear the term leader, we tend to think of someone in authority: a company CEO, a high-ranking politician, or the coach of a successful sports team. However, leadership is not limited only to people in positions of authority. Every day, we see leadership at all levels of an organization, regardless of the position an individual holds within the company.
