Evaluating Presentation Techniques- An Analysis of Zhixiang Yaos TED Talk
Zhixiang Yao delivers a speech on Living with Mistakes (YouTube, 2021). The speakers’ delivery techniques are effective in passing the message to the audience. First, the verbal communication has a positive impact on the message delivery. The speaker is eloquent, pronounces words clearly, and audible. The presence of an accent does not interfere with the speaker’s delivery of the main message. This aspect serves as a strength.
Secondly, the speaker’s gestures accompany the verbal communication technique. The speaker uses hand gestures when narrating the events that are related to their content. These gestures emphasize the message that the speaker is putting across (Ali, 2018). Thirdly, the speaker narrates a personal story when speaking to the audience. This personal story enables the audience to relate to the topic of discussion. It creates familiarity, captures the audience’s interest, and helps them understand the topic before the discussion delves deeper. Finally, the speaker uses a presentation to highlight critical points to the audience. The use of presentations enables the readers to follow through with the speaking session as the speaker elaborates more on the main points.
The weaknesses of the delivery techniques include a lack of facial expressions that would interest the audience further. The speaker maintains a neutral facial expression that does not match the content (Australian Government, n.d). In addition, the speaker does not smile during the presentation even though the content is not sad. Most importantly, the user’s background is relatively dark. The speaker’s dress is also dark, which takes away the radiance of the presentation. Based on the strengths and weaknesses, the speaker presented the message relatively well. However, the speaker could improve the presentations in the future by improving the current weaknesses.
