Ethnic Stratification in Maryland

Ethnic Stratification in Maryland

Maryland is considered a majority-minority state because, as of 2020, white non-Hispanic or Latinos make up 50.2 % of the population, while black people make up 29.4 %. This is in addition to other ethnicities like Hispanics or Latinos (11.1%) and Asians (6.33%) (Davis, 2021). As such, Maryland is a majority-minority state because more than one race makes up a majority of its population, and it is considered the most diverse state on the East Coast. Unfortunately, despite this high diversity, ethnic stratification is very evident, especially in matters of equality (Davis, 2021). Accordingly, black people, particularly black students, experience issues of residential segregation and school segregation. A clear example is in Baltimore, where black people reside in the western and eastern parts, a pattern that has persisted for over a century (Foster, 2019). Further, other reports have indicated the gaps between white people in Montgomery and other people of color. Specific areas where these gaps are evident are in housing, health, and poverty. Except for the growth of minority groups and the increase in population in Maryland, not much change has occurred. Do you need help with your assignment ? Contact us at eminencepapers.com.
