In my current position as advertising manager, I am obligated to grant my junior employees a three percent annual salary increment. However, I consider various factors before initiating the salary increment for each employee in the advertising department. One of the factors I would consider in deciding whether to offer employees an increment of 3% or less would be demand and supply. The labor market conditions of our industry would greatly determine the wage rates to provide to employees within the advertising department. For instance, when the demand for a certain type of skill within the department is more and the supply is low, I will consider increasing the wages of these employees so that they can perform additional functions within the organization. Furthermore, the other factor that would influence the percentage of salary increment would be the prevailing market rates. As an organization conducting business, I could recognize the current wage rates. If I realize that our wages are below what other companies offer in similar departments, I would consider raising the employees’ wages by 3% without a second thought.

I would adopt the five steps of decision-making in this dilemma situation. First, I would identify the goal that I intend to achieve in the end. The goal in this situation would be to identify employees who deserve a 3% salary increment based on their performance during the previous year. This would ensure I retain employees with the best performance within my department. To attain this goal, I would gather information about the performance of various employees to weigh the options available (Panpatte & Takale, 2019). Gathering enough information about the performance of employees within my advertising department will enable me to make the right decision regarding salary increments. Besides these steps, I would also consider the consequences of adopting either of the decisions (Panpatte & Takale, 2019). This is essential because it would enable me to review the pros and cons of either offering a 3% salary increment or less than a 3% salary increment. These processes will then lead me to make my decision and evaluate it.

Part 2: Case #1: VW Cheats on Emissions Testing

I accept the explanation for the emission scandal at Volkswagen AG (VW). The management team, who had adopted an autocratic leadership style, perpetrated the mission. Under both regimes of Piech and Winterkorn, these leaders advocated for corporate culture within this organization that would be explained as confident, cutthroat, and narrow-minded. This culture was responsible for making employees reluctant to contradict the decisions made by their seniors, together with shying off from admitting their mistakes done by them (Reynolds, 2014). As a result, this behavior within the organization gave room to normalizing deviance. The normalization of deviance is a condition whereby a member within the organization makes a bad decision or action to attain a certain objective. However, no one is brave enough to confront this issue because everyone believes another person will do so.

The increase in the normalization of deviance causes more unethical behaviors to be tolerated within organizational settings. The organization’s economic activities become used to unethical actions as long as they necessitate the achievement of intended objectives. In the case of VW, the company’s management realized that they could not realize the combined outcome of great performance, high gas mileage, and low emission that it had promised its customers without using emission software designed to deceive emission-testing procedures (Reynolds, 2014). The software worked in such a way that when the vehicles were set for emission testing, the software would detect and reduce the vehicle’s emissions to acceptable limits (Reynolds, 2014). While engineers working for VW were aware of this issue, they were reluctant to point it out because the software assisted the company in delivering on its mandate to its loyal customers. Also, since these employees were engineering graduates, most were workaholics and had been taught the art of agreeing to every initiative of the management team.
