Ethical Guidance
In one paragraph, use an example from your personal life to state what the author means by “murky situations.” This does not need to be in regard to computers.
One of the most controversial yet murky situations I have witnessed before is racial profiling by law enforcement. It is publicly known that there is an over-representation of blacks and people of color in correctional facilities. Sometime back, I had a friend (African American) who was a genius in penetration testing. A few months ago, while working for the police’s information technology department, a file containing cases, details of citizens and officers involved, and witnesses were accessed by an unauthorized user. Law enforcement officers approached my friend a couple of times to look at his computer and find any suspicious files that may have originated from the law enforcement servers. As much as police believe that blacks are more inclined to commit crimes, I was quite sure my friend was, and still is, trustworthy. He would not unethically hack the police servers. One vital skill this friend of mine had concerning work ethics was high Integrity (Woo, 2017). In my view, the consistent pressure to secretly investigate him relates to murky situations, as described by Woo. Using the prompts under the section “Sources of Ethical Guidance for IT Professionals,” develop your own ethical commitment statement. This section should be 2 to 3 pages.
From a personal perspective, an excellent information technology professional must have a balance concerning their professional and work responsibilities, competence, Integrity, and societal responsibilities; these factors affect a person’s work environment (Woo, 2017). Given that most information technology tasks may entail teamwork, it is appropriate that an individual commits to their work and professional responsibilities in a way that ensures the timely completion of tasks with minimal supervision (Ventimiglio, 2015). Additionally, one has to consistently refer to their organizational work policies in case a conflict arises between work and professional obligation. For instance, a boss is asking an intern to permanently delete user logs to cover for the boss’s unethical actions on the system. Regarding societal responsibility, an IT professional must ensure the business process or systems created to protect users in society, and they should be notified in case of a data breach. It impacts the brand and its users (Ventimiglio, 2015). For instance, the creation of law enforcement case systems should encrypt user details, preventing unauthorized access, and should a data breach occur, concerned parties should be notified if the data leaked poses a threat to members of society.
Information technology personnel must continually seek education in their field of speciality to maintain high competence (Mook, 2016). Technology in the past decade is highly evolving to meet client needs. In return, deductively, one must perfect their domain to meet customer requirements and needs more efficiently. For instance, computer security experts must seek professional training that aligns with the latest blockchain-based technology. Furthermore, all information technology staff must display high standards of Integrity. Users trust system users with their private and confidential data, and it befits an ethical scope to maintain high data security and privacy levels.
Finally, conclude with a personal statement of why this ethical commitment statement could help in your professional life.
In my view, I believe the ethical pillars discussed above boost not only the company’s reputation but also enhance teamwork and productivity. If, on a personal level, I can be trusted to maintain excellent professional and work responsibilities, there is a high probability of improved trust and objectives alignment among peers. The better the teams work together as one unit, the more prolific the company I work for will be, and this cultivates trust among customers while building the public image. Furthermore, a robust ethical culture among peers will facilitate reliable and faster decision-making.
