Ethical Dilemma in Social Work
The selected dilemma for the discussion is the one stating, “Is it ever ethical to use resources (e.g., a foundation grant) for purposes other than their original intention, even in emergencies?” (Reisch, 2018, p. 240). When one is faced with this kind of dilemma, one should think of ethical decision-making (Reisch, 2018). In the process of making an ethical decision, one should begin with gathering essential information about the prevailing situation: Ethical Dilemma in Social Work.
In this kind of dilemma, the specific terms of the grant should be brought to the fore and reviewed (Reisch, 2018). This step is essential because it is after the review that one can determine whether the funds can be used or not used.
The next step is to evaluate the situation using various ethical frameworks. This is also an essential step because it provides much-needed guidance. The utilitarian perspective, for instance, would argue that the reallocation of funds is justified as long as the funds are used for the overall well-being of an individual or organization (Reisch, 2018).
The deontological perspective, on the other hand, emphasizes upholding the moral action of faithfulness regardless of the outcome (Reisch, 2018). A virtue ethics perspective will argue that honesty, transparency, and responsibility are essential when making decisions. According to this approach, any action taken should align with the values of integrity and trust.
Based on the considerations made above, the best course of action with regard to the dilemma is to seek permission from the donor before reallocating the funds to the emergency. It is also important to practice open communication and transparency to help maintain trust and show that one is guided by ethical leadership (Reisch, 2018). If gaining permission is not feasible and the emergency is life-threatening, temporary reallocation with full disclosure and a plan for reimbursement is an option that can be justified. In the long run, acting with integrity and giving priority to ethical principles to ensure that the decision supports the immediate needs and the long-term credibility is what is important.
