Ethical Dilemma for Human Service Practitioners

It is clear from the research study that hurrying is one of the factors determining whether a person asking for aid would receive it from the person hurrying or not. This test is guided by the Good Samaritan Story in the Bible, where they took the part of the Levite who was in a hurry. They took the test to see if people would help a person in distress while they were in a hurry (Darley & Batson, 1937). Their study showed that chances were very low. The same study showed that such help was only possible if the person was not needed by another person. In other words, a person in a hurry was less likely to help if they were hurrying up to help another person (Darley & Batson, 1937). Personality was also tested to determine its involvement in a person’s decision to help. It was also discovered that personality does not play a major role here.

Results from the second study showed that empathy and distress affected a person’s ability to be empathetic. It was clear from this second study that a person concerned about people in need did not need to think about helping (Paciello et al., 2013). The third study examined the involvement of race when it comes to being respectful within the workplace. It was discovered that minority races were more helpful in the workplace (Singh & Winkel, 2011). This indicated that the minority races might be more likely to be helpful.

There were ethical concerns in the first test because the participants were not told about the test, which is why they were suspicious. They were also paid to participate in the test, which was an ethical concern (Jessop et al., 2012). In the second study, there was informed consent, and hence ethical concerns were not present (Wiles 2012). Ethical concerns were absent in the third study because the participants’ consent was sought. There are two primary situations. The first is when a person is in a hurry and cannot spare time to help me when I am in distress. The second situation is when an individual is not empathetic, and thus they cannot help. Therefore, in these two situations, that is, when seeking help from a person in a hurry, I would use persuasive methods such as pleading. Also, when seeking help from a person who is not empathetic, I would take time to convincingly explain myself. The common thing about these two scenarios is that I am in distress in both cases, and the people who could help may fail to help for unique reasons. The difference is that, in one case, the person who would help is in a hurry; they may want to help but are held back by being in a hurry. On the other hand, a person is unwilling to help even though he can help.
