The assignment will focus on the Tender Heart Foundation child development centre, a toddler’s classroom for kids aged three to five. In the first week, I chose an orphanage-based child development facility; therefore, the assessment was conducted using photographs taken when I visited the school. The assignment will explore the various categories of the centre from environmental evaluation, three strengths of the classroom designs, and why and how to improve the strengths and recommendations.

Environment Evaluation

The class chosen for evaluation was the preschool classroom. It is pale salmon pink, with three colourfully decorated bulletin boards, reading charts, and different pictures with one entrance door and two windows. The class had enough natural lighting both from the exterior and from the blue and pink lights within the classroom. The class is subdivided into different sections, which are executively organized. The spacing is appropriate to allow children to move freely within the class. The class has various centres: drawing, block, freedom, writing, alphabet, reading or library, and painting centres. The floor is covered with white flowery tiles with a warm grey carpet. The writing centre has toddler-size tables, shelves, and seats where kids can practice their writing skills. Different materials such as blocks, bears, books, playing toys, painting supplies, paper, castles, and drawing boards are in the classroom to allow the learner to engage in different types of activities.

Recommendations for Improvement

The classroom requires a few improvements to motivate and welcome learners to learn in a welcoming and motivating environment. First, the teacher can consider adding learners’ pictures in different centres in the class and one fun family photo to the different bulletin boards. Such pictures will help improve learning by involving learners and their families in the learning space. These pictures could improve learners’ self-confidence in different activities, while the family picture can help learners deal with anxiety and family separation at school. Also, it helps learners understand the composition of a family. Secondly, the teacher could add more reading charts in the class because there are only numbers and alphabet charts on the wall. There is a need to add sound charts and other charts that learners can use to practice. The two charts are insufficient; hence not all learners can practice well with them. Finally, the classroom should be given one dominant theme, like a favourite season, character, or book. Tjali (2018) affirms that the most vital decision for a teacher is to select a theme that not only the teacher or one learner enjoys but a theme that motivates all learners to learn.

Strengths of the Classroom Design

Depending on the categories highlighted in the environment evaluation section, the classroom design is effective and has numerous advantages. First, the classroom has various areas where learners can participate in different activities and learn new things. Secondly, the class is amply spaced and has toddler-sized furniture, allowing learners to move freely and encouraging independence among learners. Lastly, the classroom’s lighting is remarkable. The teacher effectively utilized natural daylight. Maximizing natural light is essential as it makes classroom settings more welcoming and homelike (Freeman, Decker & Decker, 2017). The classroom has its own pink and blue lights and uses natural light from the two windows, porches, and skylights, boosting adults’ and kids’ moods and lessening eyestrain and fatigue. Additionally, natural light helps in maintaining the circadian rhythms of the body and is a vital source of vitamin D. Finally, with the windows, learners can glance through them and learn about the weather.

Improving These Recommendations and Strengths

The proposals and strengths can help improve the classroom environment into a welcoming place that motivates learners and will increase the general quality of classroom structuring. Therefore, if the teacher considers these changes, this will create a refreshing, safe, welcoming, and caring environment where all learners can physically and cognitively develop. These minor changes will also help the teacher to express their skills, vision, goals, and values to the children and parents. Consequently, parents and learners who get into the class will be left with a lasting impression of a modest environment. Clearly, a classroom setting is a vital factor influencing student learning. It can impact a learner’s behaviour and a teacher’s work ethic and motivate learners to study. For instance, specific themes such as seasons and books can inspire students to learn and unite all learners.

In conclusion, the learning environment is impactful for learners; it improves learners’ experiences and motivates them to learn. Therefore, classrooms should be designed in a welcoming and motivating manner to enhance learning.
