Entry Levels into Professional Nursing

Entry Levels into Professional Nursing

Entry Levels into Professional Nursing

There are several routes that individuals can use to become practicing nurses. They include AND and BSN. There is, however, a discussion about whether the BSN should be the minimum requirement for a practicing nurse. Most people believe that the BSN route is a bust, but many students take the AND route due to fewer hours and the cost of attendance (Brusie, 2021). The minimum requirement for BSN as entry-level nursing advances the nursing profession. Nurses with BSNs can practice in all healthcare settings, such as public health, critical care, and outpatient care. They also have expanded knowledge, which will improve patient care (Brusie, 2021). Nurses who passed their licensure exam before the proposals should not be allowed to use the title of professional nurse. Instead, they should upgrade to BSN first to use this title. I would support the proposal for the minimum requirement for BSN but not for using the professional title. BSN nurses have a more expanded knowledge base and can practice in many settings. All practicing nurses need to have uniform minimum requirements to have the title of a professional nurse.

The internal difference should not impact the nursing status of a profession. The nursing profession is not defined by minimum requirements but with the science of knowledge and practices that improve patient care. Despite the differing opinions on minimum requirements, nursing is still a respectable medical profession. The public is not interested in the minimum requirements to have the title of professional nurse. Their only interest is to receive quality patient-centered care. They do not care whether ADN or BSN nurses offer care to them. They only hope that they get better and go back home to their families.

Question

Professional nursing organizations continue to propose that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) become the entry-level requirement for professional nursing. If this legislation is adopted, a current associate degree in nursing (ADN) and diploma-prepared nurses who have passed the registered nursing licensure examination would retain the title of professional nurse. After that time, non-baccalaureate nurses would not be able to use the title of the professional nurse.

Share your thoughts (Rubric Category–Preparedness)

Do you believe the proposal for the BSN as the entry-level advocates the advancement of the nursing profession? Regardless of educational preparation, should nurses who pass the registered nursing licensure examination before the proposal’s adoption be allowed to use the title of professional nurse? Would you personally support both of these proposals? Why or why not?

Discuss the following: (Rubric Category – Contributions)

Does this internal difference of opinion about making the BSN the entry-level into professional nursing impact nursing’s status as a profession?
Does the public understand or care about this?
