Engaged citizenship is characterized by concern for other people’s well-being. A person’s level of engaged citizenship can be influenced by virtues, character, and personality. According to Al Taher (2022), the main virtues that promote good character include knowledge and wisdom, courage, justice, humanity, transcendence, and temperance. Engaged citizenship can be increased by temperance, humanity, and wisdom. When dealing with utilitarian dilemmas, it may be hard to achieve emotional and moral satisfaction (Roberts, 2018). People need practical wisdom to resolve ethical dilemmas (Hurteau & Gagnon, 2022). People must also adapt to societal changes to solve problems and ethical dilemmas effectively. According to Davenport & Lloyd (2017), the networked structure of society gives people new ways to address social issues and meet social needs. Being part of a network gives individuals the responsibility to make decisions to meet the network’s objectives. Virtues are also shaped by a person’s actions and how they impact those around them. According to Sandel (2010), “If moral virtue is something we learn by doing, we have somehow to develop the right habits in the first place.” Therefore, people can learn good habits from others to develop specific virtues.

Xian Lu, popularly known as the “raincoat girl” in Wuhan, should be added to the Engaged Citizenship Hall of Fame. She is a 24-year-old girl who helped medical professionals in Wuhan cope with the long working hours by cooking meals for healthcare workers in more than 20 healthcare facilities in the region (Wickramanayake, 2020). Her actions demonstrated engaged citizenship because she expressed the well-being of the medical professionals working for long hours with limited access to good food because restaurants were closed. Figure 1 below shows a picture of Xian Lu preparing food for medical professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan.

Xian Lu’s actions made her gain recognition worldwide for sacrificing her time and putting herself at risk of getting infected to serve medical professionals. She used her popularity to call upon young people in different countries to rise to the challenges created by the pandemic. Therefore, she is a great source of inspiration for other young people who were inspired by her actions to participate in helping in the distribution of masks and sanitizers and educating people on how to protect themselves from the COVID-19 virus.

Throughout history, there have been women and men who exhibited exemplary behavior. We often look to famous people as role models and build statues or post plaques in their honor. Life is, however, full of often unheralded lives that have demonstrated positive values and engaged citizenship. Whether it’s Miguel Keith, an 18-year-old Hispanic Marine from Omaha who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in combat, or the Civil Rights leader and Nebraska Hall of Fame member Standing Bear, or perhaps someone you know, there are many role models in society.

This week’s assignment is to nominate someone you know to the fictitious Engaged Citizenship Hall of Fame. For this assignment, consider the values presented in the assigned reading articles from Week 1 through Week 6. Compose an appropriate tribute arguing that this person’s behavior exhibited one or more of the values examined in the course. If possible, include a photograph or some other appropriate image to represent the person you are nominating. Avoid overly hyperbolic or emotive attributes.
