Would you want to be placed in a nursing home if your condition warranted? Why or why not?
Yes, I would want to be placed in a nursing home when I am elderly, but it has to be one that is renowned for its remarkable services. I would not want to be in a place where the elderly are abused and neglected. Also, if my health condition is terminal, I would not opt for a nursing home, I would request that I be euthanized and the functional body organs donated to those who need them. I do not believe in a selfish death in that I would rather die sooner than later and leave behind a portion(s) of me that would be useful to others. Also, I would not want to be a burden to any of my family; hence, I would rather be euthanized if the condition I have is an absolutely irreversible one.
Would you want to have financial matters taken into account when treatment decisions you would make? Why or why not?
A few years back, I took my aunt’s advice to save $100 per month toward my sunset years care. By saving this amount of money every month, I believe I will have enough to take care of any expenses I may incur in a nursing home. I would not want my children to have an additional financial burden of catering for my nursing home expenses. If the amount I will have saved by the time I am checking in to a nursing home is insufficient, I would then take financial matters into account when treatment decisions are made. Opting for a treatment option that will lengthen my life in a bed for another 1—2 months/year is not worth it. I would opt not to have the treatment and instead spend the few days/months in peace and not leave my kin with debts to pay.
