Employee Job Satisfaction

Employee Job Satisfaction

Introduction

Three major discussions are made in this paper. They include discussing how an organization can help in developing and building teams to make them productive as a team. Another aspect discussed is the approach that is adopted by the case study company of Korean Air in enhancing employee satisfaction. Finally, the paper discusses the different ways leaders can adopt to increase job satisfaction levels among employees in an organization. The presentation of the discussion is as follows:

Explain how an organization can help develop and build teams to make them productive as a unit.

It is often postulated that teamwork has to be embraced for dreams to work, and the more employees undertake duties collectively, the easier it is to achieve effective results. Thus, it is almost inevitable for companies to embrace teamwork within their workplace; they have to undertake various approaches to develop and build teams and ensure they work in harmony to deliver results. Notably, to achieve this, three aspects must be given attention by the organization. The three include competition, cooperation, and collaboration. Competition is an effective method that organizations should consider to enhance team effectiveness. However, competition requires careful attention because it can easily grow into unhealthy competition that can hinder the organization from achieving its objectives. Therefore, competition metrics should be encouraged against other competitors and the previous periods’ performance. Employees are more likely to work more as a team when they are aware they are competing against other firms in the industry. In addition, employees will work more as a team when they are encouraged to outperform the company’s performance in the previous year.

Regarding the aspect of cooperation, organizations can encourage their members to work as a team when they support them in attaining individual goals. Notably, this way helps employees feel the organization cares about them and that they are owed to care for the organization. Team effectiveness will be attained when there is cooperation between the organization and the workers. On the final aspect, organizations should consider fostering collaboration among workers to help make teams productive as a unit. According to Azeem & Mataruna (2019), research indicates that many employees prefer to achieve organizational tasks collaboratively rather than individually. Perhaps this is a good reason for an organization to enhance collaboration among its workers. Activities such as setting common goals for workers and motivation should be considered in enhancing collaboration.

Describe an approach to employee satisfaction from the Korean Air Enhancing Employee Satisfaction article.

The Korean Air Company considered various approaches while seeking to increase employee satisfaction. One of the approaches entailed offering employees the autonomy to make decisions. One area in which the employees were left to exercise this autonomy was the decision of the amount of time to be taken in in a luncheon break. Essentially, this action was meant to make employees part of the company’s decision-making process, which enhances employee satisfaction. Another aspect that enhanced employee satisfaction was the memo that granted employees the opportunity to leave their place of work at 5.30 pm, irrespective of whether their seniors were around or not. Additionally, the company introduced another approach that entailed autonomy within the clothing system. The system allowed customer service personnel often required to present themselves in uniform to wear different clothes of their choice, such as jeans and shorts, with an aim for each worker to wear clothes that offered the highest level of employee satisfaction.

What are ways that leaders can increase levels of job satisfaction among employees within an organization?

Leaders must ensure employees are satisfied with their jobs because important aspects that drive good organizational performance can be drawn from job satisfaction. Job satisfaction can help a company minimize employee turnover and improve operational efficiency. According to Ali & Anwar (2021), workers who are satisfied with their jobs are likely to perform better than their counterparts who are not satisfied with their jobs. As a result, leaders have different approaches to consider to improve employee satisfaction in their organizations.

First, managers should develop employee potential and skills to improve job satisfaction. Notably, well-trained employees are more comfortable undertaking their jobs as compared to those with less training (Paais & Pattiruhu, 2020). Due to challenges, those with less training will become dissatisfied with their jobs. Second, leaders should employ motivational aspects such as reward and recognition. Notably, these two aspects are crucial in ensuring employees are happy about their jobs, which plays a major role in job satisfaction. Third, leaders should provide a conducive and positive work environment. Arguably, no single person would be happy while working in an unsafe and discouraging environment. Workers may be discouraged and look for a job in a different and better place. Fourth, leaders should ensure workers are engaged and involved substantially in company activities. Notably, workers are motivated and satisfied when they know that the company recognizes their presence and contribution to the overall performance. Finally, leaders should measure and evaluate the job satisfaction of their workers to identify issues that lead to dissatisfaction and address them.

Conclusion

Organizations require employees who are capable of driving positive performance. As discussed in this paper, both organization leaders and workers have a part to play. Three aspects are discussed whereby ways in which organizations can make teams effective as a unit are given. The case of Korea Airlines informs the second part, whereby the ways to improve workers’ satisfaction are identified. Finally, this paper notes that leaders play a significant part in ensuring employee satisfaction.

Korea’s flagship carrier Korean Air, which has achieved great success in the global aviation industry over the last 50 years, is now working internally to raise employee satisfaction, in the belief that this is the best way to become one of the most prestigious airlines in the world.
It has initiated numerous programs to guarantee employees more freedom in working-time management and attire as well as provide better working schedules for cabin crew.
The carrier recently held a ‘family day’ event for the first time, inviting over 1,600 children of employees for a chance to learn about and experience their parents’ professions.
‘We are making these changes to create a work environment which anyone would love to be part of,’ a Korean Air official said.
Korean Air HQ becomes children’s playground
On Sept. 20, the employees and their children visited the Korean Air headquarters located in western Seoul for its first ‘family day’ event, where it gave youngsters a glimpse of what their parents do for a living.
One of the maintenance hangars was turned into a theme park consisting of a Boeing 787 airplane, an air castle, a family photo zone and snack corner, with programs such as face painting and mini Olympics provided.
After the event the company’s online bulletin board was flooded with comments of gratitude from employees, who said they were pleased that their children got a chance to learn about their professions and have fun at their workplace.
Korean Air plans to make the event a regular affair and to expand it to all other Hanjin Group affiliates.
In May, the company also invited employees’ parents to a similar event. In August, it hosted a table tennis class for 100 children of workers, with players of a table tennis team sponsored by Korean Air. In summer, it also opened the swimming pool at its training center to employees’ families.
More flexibility in work
Starting this year, the company implemented numerous initiatives with the aim of enhancing employee satisfaction.
Workers can now choose when to take their one hour lunch break between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. a computer message pops up and an announcement is made to signal that it’s time to get off work, so workers can leave whether or not their supervisors leave first.
Starting Sept. 2, Korean Air also initiated a free attire system, which allows employees, excluding customer service employees and cabin crew who wear uniforms, to wear clothes of their preference including shorts and jeans, to create a friendlier and more casual work environment.
