Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment

Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment

Champoux (2016) states that emotional intelligence (EQ) is important in organizational socialization. My emotional intelligence test results surprised me because they revealed that I have not yet attained the recommended EQ level. I scored 14 on self-awareness, 17 on self-management, 20 on social awareness, and 19 on relationship management. The suggested interpretation is that any area with a score below 18 requires improvement. Therefore, I need to focus on improving self-awareness and self-management so that I can be in a better position to understand other people’s emotions better. Self-awareness is the capacity to become the object of a person’s attention (Morin, 2011). The outcome of the results is valid because it identifies my strengths in interacting with others in a social setting, as indicated by the high score in social awareness.

One of the things I would suggest for the effective management of someone with my EQ profile is encouraging them to work in teams. Individuals with high social awareness and good relationship management perform best in teams because they can mobilize others to work towards a common goal and facilitate sharing ideas to improve performance. The second suggestion is active engagement in decision-making. Individuals with my EQ are likely to know the right action to be taken in different situations, particularly when dealing with people with different perspectives. Therefore, allowing them to express their ideas is essential by actively engaging them in decision-making and acknowledging their contribution.

The main thing that has worked well for me is reviewing the outcome of different decisions in a given scenario and sharing my thoughts on the best decision. However, this may not work for everyone, particularly with people with different perspectives and authority. In my case, I am using my perception of my Emotional Intelligence to improve my EQ by identifying my weaknesses and how I can eliminate them.
