Background

Anne and Mark are siblings from a middle-class family. The two are 17 and 19 years old, respectively, and during their childhood, they lost one of their family members, their younger brother, Bob. Bob passed away at age 10, and his death affected the whole family. The three were very close as siblings, and being that their parents were rigorous and would sometimes beat them up as part of the punishment, they found emotional and physical protection in their unity and closeness. As children, they were never taken to church or any religious gathering. Their parents, primarily alcoholics, did not attend church even though their families were Catholics. Anne and Mark met a friend called Vincent, 23 years old, who spent most of the time with them at school. As a close friend, Vincent suggested to them that they should join a group called the healing group. Vincent has convinced them that through this group and their rituals, they can be reunited with their younger brother and that the practices of this group can offer psychological and emotional healing.

The case story

Anne and Mark are facing emotional and psychological stress following their childhood experience. They lost their brother, who died at age 10, which affected them emotionally. The two also were brought up by alcoholic and abusive parents, and these experiences encouraged them to be very close to each other. However, their brother’s passing and the parents’ stress have affected them at their older age (Jung & Lee, 2022). While seeking help, they met a friend named Vincent, who is 23 and a member of a healing group. Anne and Mark have already attended the meetings held by this group and participated in some of their rituals. Some of the practices of this group include killing animals and bodily torture of these animals. The group leader believes that through these practices, the disturbed person is releasing the anger within, leading to healing. These practices of harming and torturing animals are illegal and related to psychological issues. Over time, these two have internalized these practices that are not helping them get the healing they need. Mark has confessed to feeling angrier than before. Notably, this group is an example of a non-religious cult.

Analysis of the case

Anne and Mark have had an abusive childhood and have lost their beloved brother. This past confirms that these two are having psychological challenges. McKay et al. (2021) have demonstrated that childhood abuse can cause people to have mood disorders, depression, and post-traumatic disorders. While this is happening to the two, they must note that they lost one of their siblings, which has also affected them significantly. Another significant factor that must be considered is that their parents have not given these two any spiritual direction. This state places them at risk of being persuaded to join any religion or cult as long as they believe it offers them peace of mind (Rousselet et al., 2017). The lack of religious understanding has also made them think that through the practices in this cult, they can reunite with their brother. These two need help to get through their psychological challenges, and the help can be offered as recommended below.

Recommendations

Anne and Mark need both counseling and psychiatric treatment. Counseling is required to help these two understand that their practices in this cultic group are not helpful. They should be guided to see that these actions are illegal and unhealthy for their mental health. The counseling process should also include conducting these two to understand that they cannot keep holding onto the loss of their brother and that a time comes when they should let go. The counseling program should also involve helping these two to get out of the cult. The counseling program should be between 20 to 30 sessions that last between 45 and 50 minutes per session. The psychiatric treatment these individuals need should deal with the emotional and psychological challenges resulting from their childhood abuse and trauma. The counseling program should be the first of these interventions since without them understanding their state. They may not be ready to go for psychiatric treatment.
