Effective Teachers

Reasons for Being Effective

  • He understood the needs of every learner and used varying teaching strategies depending on the needs.
  • He treated students as friends.
  • He created a space where learners could ask any question.
  1. Frida Edward –This was my social studies teacher. Her teaching skills did not only impact me but the whole class and every other class she taught. As such, her subject was consistently well performed.

Reasons for Being Effective

  • She was very inspiring, thus making me believe I could understand anything she taught.
  • She used rewards to motivate the learners.
  • She encouraged working in groups and gave strategies for being successful in the groups.

Ineffective Teacher

  1. Morgan- She was my language teacher, and she made it seem very hard to comprehend what she taught. Consequently, I thought languages, precisely English, were very difficult. This only changed for me when I had a different instructor.

Reasons for being ineffective

  • She assumed I could never perform better
  • She never understood my learning needs
  • She had a negative teaching attitude
  1. Evans – He was the most boring instructor I ever had. Whenever he entered the class, I found myself sleeping, and for this reason, I was never on good terms with him.

  • His teaching was more of a lecture rather than engaging us.
  • He barely gave compliments, even to well-performing students

Statement on effective and ineffective strategies

I would love to be an effective teacher; therefore, there are strategies I will utilize and some I will avoid. One of the practices will be understanding the needs of every learner and using varying teaching strategies depending on what every learner needs. As such, I will incorporate a differentiated teaching strategy. Magableh & Abdullah (2020) state that differentiated instruction entails adjusting teaching depending on learning styles and talents. Another effective strategy I will use is allowing for cooperative learning and showing the learners how they can better each other. Additionally, I will use student-centred learning, where the learners will have a voice in the learning process and they will be accountable for their learning. I will create the space and freedom for the learners to ask questions without fear. Nayir (2017) states that learner interest and engagement in class are vital for active learning. Additionally, I will incorporate rewards in my teaching strategies to ensure the students stay motivated. I will also include fun learning strategies to avoid boring the students.

On the other hand, I will avoid using the lecture teaching method. This might not engage learners effectively, and they may get bored in the process of learning passively. Additionally, I will avoid bringing the students down or telling them they can’t. I will be cautious of my language to correct the students because my words could motivate or demotivate them. I will also avoid going to class with a negative attitude since I could transfer it to the students. I will avoid demotivating the learners or using strategies that do not encourage the learners. I will avoid failing to recognize excellence or improvement among the learners.

List two of the most effective teachers you had while you were in school. List three specific things these teachers did that made them effective. Now, think about two of the least effective teachers you’ve encountered. Again, list three specific things these teachers did that hampered their effectiveness. Then, compare the two lists for differences. 

Analyze these differences in a one-page statement, “Effective Teaching in My Classroom.”

Include in your statement: What kinds of things can you implement in your own teaching, based on the effective teachers?
