Setting goals for students defines the ‘why’ behind the teaching. It helps to determine why the lesson activities have been planned and the strategies that will be best suited to achieve those goals. Therefore, the goal timeline above will act as a guide to determine how best the students can achieve the learning standard.
The timeline allows for progress monitoring because the teacher can progressively address each short-term goal. Different assessment methods are used for each of the goals. Using different assessment methods is important because it allows one to align them to each educational goal (Reynolds et al., 2010). Each assessment method is designed to inform the teacher what the student has learned at a particular level of the learning process. They are supposed to be closely aligned with the specific goal, but they eventually reinforce each other to determine the student’s learning in the long term.
Progress monitoring also allows for the assessment of the student’s behavioral and academic performance. The process of assessment helps to determine how well the students are learning the concepts of the lessons. In this process, the teacher can also monitor the student’s behavior. For instance, in class discussions, the teacher can examine the participation level of each of the students to examine their behavioral performance and the extent to which they are meeting the class’s academic goals.
Lastly, this timeline includes a plan for collaborating with families for the continued growth and well-being of the students. Students spend a lot of their time at home. Therefore, there should be a plan to reinforce their learning when they are away from school. Collaborating with families helps to support the children as they learn (Overton, 2016). It also reinforces their learning away from the classroom. This collaboration enhances their overall success in the classroom.
