E-Portfolio Summary
The e-portfolio is a great idea for one to have an electronic resume. The main advantage is that it allows a person to share a large amount of information with several people, for example, if a person is participating in a group interview. When a person’s portfolio is online, the website address can be added to the resume or cover letter so that any potential employers can access it and view it prior to attending the interview. An additional advantage is that it allows a person to highlight their technical skills.
However, creating an online portfolio can be a challenging task. The first challenge I faced was some indecision. I had never done a portfolio, and with that, I did not want to get it wrong. The templates available on the site were somewhat confusing; I could not decide which to use. I did not want the template I chose to look too ‘serious’ or too ‘casual.’ I pictured myself as the recruitment manager and tried to figure out what I would think of the template I chose. I wanted the templates to also portray my go-getter and bold personality, and that took a while to choose. Once I had chosen the template, the next challenge was deciding how much, too much, or too little information. I did not want to enter too much unnecessary information. On the other hand, I did not want to leave information I deemed to be too trivial, only to regret it. There may be information that I may deem trivial for the recruitment manager, but it may be the defining information that could get me hired for the job. Although an e-portfolio can be tailored to meet the requirements of a specific job, it means having to go through the entire process again, including having to decide what to add and what not to add.
