Divorce and Separation

Divorce and Separation

Divorce and separation are currently a common trend, and such incidences are increasing, with statistics showing that divorce and separation are much higher today than a decade ago. Some scholars have argued that the increase in divorce and separation results from weaker marriages, while others blame it on the policies that have made divorce easier (Wagner, 2020). What is of concern is the fact that divorce and separation have a significant impact on the development of children because it affects them emotionally and cognitively. Most studies sought in this research paper have shown that divorce affects children of all ages. Most of the reviewed literature only focuses on the impacts of divorce on children. These sources have revealed that divorce affects children’s cognitive and emotional development. This trend is therefore worrying, which calls for further studies.

Since most studies have only focused on children, this research study will examine the impacts of divorce and separation on adolescents. This study will examine how divorce and separation affect adolescents cognitively and emotionally. The adolescent years continue to hold a lot of interest because, at this stage, the teenager experiences many changes that have an emotional impact (Johnsen, Litland, & Hallström, 2018). Therefore, the research hypothesis is that divorce and separation at this specific age place a more significant toll on the emotions and cognition of adolescents. Furthermore, teenagers may be adversely affected during this time when they require the most attention from their parents (Garriga & Pennoni, 2020). Hence, divorce and separation are directly connected to teenagers’ poor psychological and emotional development. The researcher intends to use a quantitative research method, which can give a trend of this event. Additionally, the quantitative research method is chosen because it is the best to use when the researcher wants to cover a larger population. With a larger population, the results can be easily generalized.
