Diversity and Intercultural Backgrounds
Significant Learnings about Diversity and Intercultural Backgrounds
The most significant thing I learned in this unit about diversity and intercultural backgrounds is that differences in rules, phases, and norms cause cultural diversity and differences in intercultural backgrounds. Rules are the unique standards of conduct outlined clearly in writing or orally. According to Hamilton & Creel (2023), rules may include expected behaviors, membership requirements, and meeting times. Norms are implicit codes of conduct that change over time, whereas phases create situations where people express specific behavior based on the rules within their group and norms. I have learned that the conflict phase is the most delicate when handling cultural diversity because cultural norms and rules must be observed. I have also learned that intercultural backgrounds and cultural diversity can be exploited to generate new ideas as long as people from different intercultural backgrounds are willing to work together and follow an organization’s rules, policies, and procedures. Applying This Knowledge
Organizations in the modern business environment are embracing workforce diversity because of global expansion and the immigration of people with the skills and competencies needed to enhance organizational success. I can apply what I have learned about diversity and intercultural backgrounds in a professional, diverse context by creating rules regulating how people from diverse cultural backgrounds should interact. I can create a diversity policy and a code of conduct that requires everyone to respect other people’s cultural values and norms to prevent conflict and encourage collaboration. I can also apply the knowledge of intercultural backgrounds in the professional context when selecting communication channels and interpreting my colleagues’ business practices because communication and business etiquette are influenced by cultural background. I can focus on learning about my colleagues’ cultures and how they impact their behavior in the workplace and interactions with colleagues to create a friendly work environment.
