Differences between Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion have become common concepts in the modern business environment. Many organizations have included diversity and inclusion in their organizational culture and encourage employees from different backgrounds to apply for vacant positions. Diversity represents individuals with different characteristics such as age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, national origin, and education. Every individual has different beliefs, thoughts, and ideas that can contribute to organizational performance. Consequently, inclusion is the procedures and methods used to integrate people from different backgrounds. Organizations may use inclusive rules and policies to create a conducive work environment for people from different backgrounds.

Impact of Diversity Without Inclusion

According to Purity et al. (2017), diversity cannot survive without inclusion because emphasizing diversity without inclusion does not address ethnic, racial, gender, and disability biases that are linked to various stereotypes in many societies. Diversity without inclusion creates room for unintentional biases that could create hostility among diverse groups, thus limiting the success of diversity programs. Inclusion is also needed in promoting diversity to eliminate prejudices that can create a negative attitude toward a specific group of people, such as people from a certain ethnic group or people with disability.

Importance of Diversity

Globalization has increased the growth of a diverse workforce in many organizations. Diversity is important because it improves problem-solving and critical thinking in the workplace because employees from different backgrounds have different experiences that can be used to find solutions for problems within the organization and new ideas that can be implemented to enhance organizational performance (Cletus et al., 2018). Diversity also promotes employee growth and development by exposing employees to an environment with different opinions, cultures, and ideas. Therefore, employees can develop cultural awareness and interpersonal skills. Diversity is also associated with increased innovativeness because a diverse workforce includes people with different skills, ideas, competencies, and experiences that can be leveraged to create and implement new ideas.
