How would you determine team composition in a multinational team?

The composition of team members determines the effectiveness of a team. Therefore, I would use the team’s goals and objectives to determine the team’s composition. The goals and objectives would guide me on the skills, knowledge, and competencies the team members should have, the desirable geographical location of team members based on time differences and language, and the number of team members needed. I would also have to consider team members’ technology savvy and familiarity with tools such as Google Meetings and Zoom. Therefore, the ideal team members will be individuals who can use online collaborative communication tools, fluently express themselves in English, and have the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to meet the team’s objectives. I would also ensure that the selected team members are from different backgrounds to facilitate innovation by exchanging different ideas and opinions. Diverse teams are innovative because each team member has different views and experiences. Therefore, I would ensure that every team member brings something unique to the team to enhance its productivity and effectiveness.

How will you address the diversity of cultures within the team?

One of the things I would do to address the diversity of the cultures within the team is delegate tasks based on the cultural values and beliefs of the team members. People from different cultures have different work schedules, hence the need to confirm a team member’s availability when delegating tasks and ensure that the time assigned for the task aligns with their work schedule customs. I also have to consider religious practices when delegating tasks because different religious beliefs have customs that may lead to the unavailability of team members at certain times and days. The second thing I would do is use a communication strategy that embraces all communication styles. Barriers to communication can lead to conflict among team members and reduce the team’s productivity, hence the need to ensure that every member’s communication needs are considered. I would ensure that communication is open and transparent so that information is shared clearly with all team members. I would also encourage team members to suggest any improvements that should be made to improve communication within the team. The third thing I would do is create a common goal for the team. According to Huang et al. (2017), a common goal creates equal status among team members. Therefore, there would be a reduced likelihood of conflict among team members.

Because the team will operate in a virtual existence, what structure and support will this team need to foster productivity?

The team will have a designated leader who will communicate the team’s objectives, goals, and rules to all team members. The team leader will engage team members in creating a schedule for activities within the team, such as meetings and submission of tasks assigned to each member. The team leader will also delegate tasks to ensure every team member is engaged. The team members must meet regularly to review progress towards achieving the team’s goals and ensure that every member is engaged. The main support that the team needs to foster productivity is access to the communication and collaboration tools that will be selected. For instance, all team members must have access to Zoom and Google meetings because they are the main collaborative communication tools that can be used to engage all group members simultaneously. The team members should also have access to stable internet so that they can contribute to discussions during meetings. It is also important to create a portal where team members can interact and exchange opinions and ideas within the week before the scheduled Zoom meetings. Team members should be consulted when creating the portal to ensure it is appropriate for them.

How will you measure the success of the team?

One of the parameters that will be used to measure the team’s success is the time team members take to complete assigned tasks. The main indicator of productivity and effectiveness will be the completion of tasks within the specified time and meeting the performance expectations in every task. Success will also be measured based on progress toward meeting the team’s objectives. Different milestones will be used to measure progress and predict the team’s success in achieving its goals and objectives. Another parameter that will be used to measure the team’s success is the generation of new ideas among team members. A weekly review will be conducted to review the new ideas proposed by team members and their applicability to the team, thus keeping track of all new ideas.

What characteristics will you look for in a leader of this team?

One of the characteristics that I will look for in a leader of the team is cultural intelligence. According to Lisak (2013), cultural intelligence is a person’s ability to effectively address people from different cultural backgrounds. The leaders should have the commitment and self-motivation to adjust and adapt to the multicultural environment and exhibit appropriate behaviors when interacting with team members from different cultures. The second characteristic is openness to cultural diversity. High openness to cultural diversity is characterized by a positive view of differences and a willingness to learn from others. The leader must also have good conflict management skills. Conflict is inevitable in multicultural teams due to differences in perspectives, beliefs, values, and cultures (Alemu, 2015). Therefore, the leader should be able to effectively resolve conflicts among team members and prevent tensions that could cause conflict. Another characteristic that the leader must have is emotional intelligence. Dealing with people from different cultures requires developing trust and maintaining engagement. Therefore, it is important to understand people’s emotions to respond appropriately.
