Part 2 Discussion: Responding to Challenging Behaviors in Early Childhood Settings

Paragraph 1: Describe the challenging behaviors observed in the video and explain how they align with the definition of challenging behavior. In the video, Joshua demonstrates challenging behaviors such as aggressive outbursts, defiance toward authority, and difficulty interacting positively with peers. These behaviors interfere with the learning process, may be dangerous, and prevent him and the rest of the class from benefiting from lessons. These behaviors should be intervened and managed so as not to escalate as a source of further disruption to the class and the children: Discussions 11 and 12.

However, these behaviors should be handled cautiously to avoid eliciting further unpleasant behaviors in the child. According to the definition of challenging behavior, these actions interfere with learning, create a disruptive classroom atmosphere, and could lead to more serious issues if unaddressed (Kostelnik et al., 2016). Joshua’s behavior thus aligns with challenging behavior definitions due to its impact on classroom dynamics and future implications for social development.

Paragraph 2: Critique the teacher’s responses. Which strategies were effective, and which could be improved? When replying to Joshua, the teacher was polite, and this helped avoid a stressful environment. Recall that by using redirection and giving clear guidance, the teacher was able to reduce immediate disruptions. Still, several of the reported strategies could be enhanced. For example, instead of only redirecting, the teacher might consider using more proactive steps like anticipating triggers and preparing Joshua for transitions.

Rewards can be used for the times when Joshua exercised control, and having a structure of positive reinforcement would motivate the child to exhibit positive behaviors. The teacher might also consider assigning Joshua some particular duties or tasks to facilitate the boy’s energy. This way, the teacher demonstrated a positive way of how such students should be handled, using a polite and calm tone when addressing them and using incentives and rewards to enhance positive behaviors.

Paragraph 3: Suggest at least two proactive strategies and one intervention technique to support Joshua or children with similar behaviors. Joshua or children with similar behaviors could benefit much from several proactive strategies and intervention techniques. Some of the proactive strategies include considering the use of a daily check-in schedule that Joshua and other children could use to assess and gauge their emotional state before the class and teaching process begin. This strategy will help articulate feelings that might otherwise manifest as disruptive behavior during class time. The second strategy includes using a visual schedule for Joshua and other similar children.

The schedule will predict the likelihood of such behaviors from occurring and reduce the anxiety that is caused by classroom activities that he engages in. An intervention technique would include having a “cool-down” corner in the classroom with calming tools like stress balls or sensory materials that can help Joshua self-regulate when he feels overwhelmed. This space would offer him an alternative to lashing out, supporting emotional development and self-regulation skills.
