Josie King’s story is insightful regarding medical errors and patient safety. Josie King’s death resulted from severe dehydration, inappropriate narcotics administration, and an undetected central line infection. All of these can be related to medical negligence. Josie’s death could have been prevented had the communication been clear regarding the medication administration and if the views and concerns of the patient’s parent, Sorrel King, had been considered by the care providers. A similar tragedy can be prevented by making process changes that include ensuring that all communication and orders within all care teams are recorded and a copy placed by the patient’s bedside; the healthcare providers need to be re-educated on the need for all-round monitoring of patients during treatment and recovery to detect infections early. Another recommendation is to make the patient and their family a part of the care planning decision-making and to deliver care in a way that focuses on the patient, including how care providers communicate with patients and their families (Tran, 2021).

The hospital and its providers could have given Sorrel King more control over Josie’s plan of care by first listening to her observations and concerns regarding her child’s health and behavior. They would also have tried to explain to her the reasons for all decisions made in caring for her daughter and make her a part of all decisions made. Sorrel’s statement, “You did this to her and now you must fix her,” would have triggered an empathetic response, and I would try my best to offer her comfort while appreciating her concerns. As a clinician, I would make patients feel respected and included in decisions about their health care by communicating in a manner that they understand. Clear communication in medical care improves patient experiences and their satisfaction with care (Trant et al., 2019). I would also actively listen to them, involve them and their family in decision-making, address their concerns, and shape care based on their preferences and values.
